Visitation of Northants, 1681

Dear Group,

I am hoping that somebody maybe able to help me. We have
the CDs of the
Visitations, including the one for Northamptonshire in
1681. Page 25 of that
Visitation covers the Brograve family of Wapenham and
Gayton, for which a
statement is made that:
[No arms recorded in this Visitation]
It then adds: "Arms in Visitation of 1618-9. Quarterly of
seven": which includes
as item 2, arms of [Littlebury]; and 3, Barry of eight
ermine & gules [Kirton];
and 4, arms of [Woodthorpe]; and 5, arms of [St. Cleere]
(N.B. St. Cleere is only
mentioned on Lincs. Appendix II, page 131, mentioned below)
It then has a note:
"[For earlier generations see Metcalfe, Vis. of Northants,
1618, pp. 4, 71.]

I am anxious to find out how the arms of Littlebury, and
the above mentioned
Kirton blazon, became combined in the arms of Brograve of
Northants, which
evidently occurred sometime prior to 1504.
See Visitation of Lincolnshire, Appendix II, page 131,
showing the pedigree of
Brograve of Braughin, co. Lincs., which shows a John
Brograve marrying
Elizabeth Litlebery of co. Linc. (sic), da. and co-heir of
William Litlebery and his
wife Elizabeth St. Cleere, also a dau and heir.
This couple having a son
William Brograve, 19 H. 7. (1504) who was the great-
grandfather of the Nicholas
Brograve of Wapenham, co. Northants, who heads the above
mentioned 1681
pedigree.

The Visitation of Lincs. 1562 - 64, p189, clearly shows the
descent of
Peter Kirton married to Elizabeth Woodthorp(e), dau. & heir
(actually co-heir)
of Sir William Woodthorp, Kt.; which couple had a son Sir
Robert Kirton (or
de Kirketon), Kt., who with his wife was the father of
Sir (later Lord) John
Kirton (or Kirketon). (this pedigree then incorrectly shows
an Elizabeth Kirton
marrying Sir Humphrey Litlebury, identifying this Elizabeth
as the daughter of
Sir John, when she was in fact the dau. of Sir Robert,
and the sister and
co-heir of Sir John, as is correctly shown in "Lincolnshire
Pedigrees", p. 598,
where Elizabeth is correctly shown as the daughter of
Ralph, and the sister
of John.
So the combination of the arms of Littlebury / Kirton (or
Kirketon)/ Woodthorpe
seems logical, except for two things:
1. From several sources the arms of Sir Robert de
Kirton /Kirketon, and his
son and heir , Sir John, are identified as "Barry
of six, gules and ermine"
(i.e. NOT "Barry of eight, ermine
and gules.")
2. "The Visitation of Lincolnshire ( p.189), and
"Lincolnshire Pedigrees" pps.
598, 599, 600, 601 & 602, both show extensive
pedigrees of Littlebury,
but do not seem to have a single William at the
right time, married to
an Elizabeth St. Cleere, with a dau. and co-heir
Elizabeth, who married
John Brograve in about 1500 ?

Does anybody have any explanation why the Kirton blazon
might have had
a bar of ermine added at the top, and a bar of gules
added at the bottom,
between about 1304 when Sir Robert died, and about 1500,
when Elizabeth
Liltlebury evidently married John Brograve ?
Might the above mentioned Metcalfe pedigree throw some light
on this ?
Does anybody know where I can see a copy of it ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, Jonathan Kirton
