Bulkley of Eaton and Alstanton and the Popham Family

Reference to V3 P269 Ormerod, and the following
pedigree information is provided:

John de Bulkylegh of Ayton died 1402 leaving widow
Matild.
William de Bulkylegh succeeded 1402-1425 (approx)
William de Bulkylegh succeeded 1425-1467

All this information is incorrect. John de Bulkylegh
died between 1433 and 1439. And there was only one
William de Bulkylkegh who was aged about 40 (1439) and
died 1467.

John B of Eyton and Alstanton married Christian
Ripariis 1390 (about). Children William, Richard,
Roger, Joanna, and perhaps Arthur.

1402/1403: Writ de Diemclausit extremit - John (son)
Robert B - death of John B of Eyton. Matild (widow)
had livery of dower. This John de Bulkylegh was of
Nantwich.(Ormerod V3 p269)

As William B (eldest son) was born 1395-1400, the
possibility of John B dying 1402 with a wife named
Matild is very remote.

1433: John Bullocie and wife Catherine, John Popham
Knight, Robert Burton, William Staunford, John
Tropewee regarding manor of Magna Paxton. (F/F Hunt.)

This is John B of Eyton and Alstanton. Christian has
apparently died. Catherine is one of Sir John
Popham's daughters. Probably it was an arranged
marriage.

1439:William Bulkylegh of Eyton son of John and
Christian (age 40 plus) to hold manor of Burgate and
Hundred of Fordingbridge (Hants) at death of John
Ryvers (Leckhull) (Fine Rolls)

The purpose was not to criticise Ormerod's excellent
work. What is of interest is that Burks or Dugdale
issued a very defective Bulkley Pedigree of Charles
Bulkelegh of Eaton (Hants). The pedigree claimed that
Charles first married a daughter of Sir John Popham
(not named), secondly Elizabeth Herteshorn 1459, and
Eleanor Abaroe thereafter.

Question is did Charles B actually marry a daughter
of Sir John Popham or is this an error. Or is it
possible that he married his father's wife? Or did he
marry Catherine Popham's sister?

One fact is certain. The manor of Magna Paxton Hunts
was held by descendants of Charles Bulkeley

Thank you

Paul Bulkley
