Dear Newsgroup,

Robert's RD600, p. 189 shows a descent for Catherine Long, wife of Sir Henry Moore, from Katherine Alington & Zouche Tate. Katherine Alington's ancestry is outlined there, but Zouche Tate's is not.

It appears that Zouche Tate was the son of Sir William Tate & Elizabeth Zouche, m. 28 Dec. 1597 at St. John, Hackney, Middlesex, England. William was the brother of Francis Tate. Both were sons of Bartholomew Tate by Dorothy Tanfield, daughter of Francis Tanfield (DNB 19:376-7).

Middle Temple Records (London: 1904), 1:227 contains the following entry dated, 1 June 1579:

"Messrs. William and Francis Tate, sons and heirs of Bartholomew Tate, of Coventry, and late of Staple Inne, gents., ... Bound with Mr. Robert Tanfilde and each other."

As such, Catherine Long would share ancestry with the Randolph family of Virginia.

The Visitations of Northamptonshire, 1564 & 1618/9, p. 199 identifies the wife of Sir William Tate as Elinor, daughter of Sir William Zouche of Harringworth. As mentioned above, the marriage record in St. John, Hackney clearly identifies her as Elizabeth Zouche. CP XII (2): 951, confirms this identification, showing her to be the daughter of Edward Zouche.

The Tanfield ancestry of Francis Tanfield & his wife, Bridget Cave, parents of Dorothy Tanfield, can be found in Weis' MC Sureties (5th ed.), line 71; Faris' PA (2nd ed.), p. 301; and Richardson's MCA, pp. 811-2, among other sources.

Comments welcome.
