Dear Newsgroup,

Edmund Daundy was the maternal grandfather of Jane Fernley, first wife of
Sir Nicholas Bacon, lord keeper of the great seal of England during the
reign of Queen Elizabeth [DNB 1:838-843].

He appears to have been a wealthy merchant of Ipswich, England. The National
Archives contains a description of the will of Edmund Daundy, Merchant of
Saint Lawrence Ipswich, Suffolk, dated 23 October 1515 [Catalogue reference
PROB 11/18, Dept Records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury]. Edmund
appears to have died shortly after this date. He was the father of four
children: His elder son, William; younger son, Robert; and two daughters,
Anne and Joan. Anne married William Fernley, of West Creting, co. Suffolk.
Robert married Joan Read, of Beccles, co. Suffolk. Robert died in 1558.

Access 2 Archives contains the following record:

Ipswich St Lawrence Parish Records
Reference: FB 106/D1/1
Creation dates: 1539 - 1812

Various memoranda relating to benefice and endowments. Also detailed account
of the establishment of St. Thomas Chantry, in this church by Edmund Daundy,
in 1514 for a secular priest, "For prosperous state of our Soverin, Lord the
Kynge, his dear beloved Wyfe Katherine, and also for me, the said Edmund
Daundy, Thomas Wolsey, clarke, Dean of Cathedral Church of Lincoln, Wm.
Daundy, my son..."

The Thomas Wolsey mentioned here is Cardinal Thomas Wolsey.

John Sherren Brewer's, "The Reign of Henry VIII from His Accession to the
Death of Wolsey" (London: J. Murray, 1884.), 1:61, provides further details:

"...the Privy Seal, Feb. 21, 1510, granted to Edmund Daundy, of Ipswich,
empowering him to found a chantry in the southern nave of St. Lawrence, of
Ipswich, to pray for the good estate of the King and the Queen, and among
others for the souls of Robert Wolsey and Joan his wife, father and mother
of Thomas Wolsey, Dean of Lincoln."

Secondary sources state that Cardinal Wolsey's mother, Joan, was the sister
of Edmund Daundy. This is unlikely, as Edmund Daundy and Cardinal Wolsey
appear to be of the same generation. Yet, there does seem to be some kind of
family connection between the Wolsey and Daundy families. Marshall's "Guide"
indicates there is a Daundy pedigree contained in Page's "History of
Suffolk." I do not have access to this (I presume this is a reference to
Augustine Page's "Topographical and Genealogical History of the County of
Suffolk.")

If someone with access to Page could check and see if there is anything
added to the above, I would greatly appreciate it. I would also be
interested in any information regarding a connection between the Wolsey and
Daundy families. Further comments welcome. Thank you.

P.S. I wish everyone a happy New Year!
