The Ledger Book of Vale Royal Abbey reveals
interesting information in connection with the
construction of the building 1277-1279.

Artisans were employed from throughout England.
However many local inhabitants assisted in the
construction work, and their names and contracted work
is recorded.

Roger of Nordwich supplied 20 dozen iron for 20/- (1d
each). Steel was supplied at 14d each glanet (30
pieces per glanet) Nails were 9d to 15d per thousand.
Boards made out of lumber supplied by king 2/- to 2/6
per thousand. Lime 11/-to 12/- per cwt.

William de Eyton supplied 60 thraves and a further 72
thraves of straw for making plaster, and for covering
work during the winter at 2d per thrave.

The carriage of quarry stone, lumber, and sundry
material supplies 2d to 3d per journey ( one horse)_
and 3d to 4d (two horses). Robert and Randolph de
Eyton were recorded of many occupied with this task.

Employment of carpenters included William de Eyton
(18d per week), Nicholas and Robert de Eyton (12d per
week felling trees and preparing timber)

William de Eyton is recorded as an overseer of a
general work force of laborers.

For anyone with ancesters in Cheshire, the Ledger
provides an enormous amount of information of the
local people and their occupations in connection with
the construction of the Abbey. Also the unhappiness of
many due to the apparent strict rules of the Abbot
1300 - 1340 in his treatment of them.
