If your 12th/13th Century ancestor was worth say 20
Starling Pennies, the following information provided
by Stow would be helpful:

At the time of Richard I, the weight of an Easterling
Penny was 32 grains of wheat (dry and round) taken
from the middle of the ear. This would be the weight
of a Starling Penny.

20 Starling Pennies = 1 oz.
12 oz = 1 pound troy.
8 pound troy to make 1 gallon wine.
8 gallons wine = 1 bushel London measure.

The name "Easterling Penny" was named after the makers
of the coin.

If you are still a little puzzled, please note that
your ancestor's wealth/weight was either 640 grains of
wheat (dry and round) or one ninety sixth gallon of
wine.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley
