Lorette de Dover, unresolved parentage

Legg inn av Symonds » 17 des 2006 20:49:53

My e-mail of 6 Sep 2006 addressed question of the parentage of subject
person:

--The CP, Vol 8 at 518, includes the following: He [William Marmion] m.,
.... 1248 Lorette, da. of Royce, da. and h. of Robert de Dover. The
citation is to Pytchley at 48, stating that by the charter of 1248 Royce
de Dover granted her manor of Luddington to William Marmion, son of
Robert Marmyon the younger, and her da. Lorette, his wife.

--Other sources state father of Lorette de Dover was Richard Fitzroy,
Lord of Chilham, and mother was Rohese de Dover. [This is the view of
Gary Boyd Roberts in _The Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants_, 3d Ed.]

Now, having obtained Volume XIV of the CP, I see that:
CP Volume XIV/46 changes name of parent of Rose from "Robert of Dover"
to "Foubert de Douvres": "da. and h. of Foubert DE DOUVRES". Citation is
to Genealogist, N. S., 1906, vol. xxii, pp. 107-8.

This citation appears to be inapt because there is no mention of
"Foubert" in the article - only "Robert of Dover".

Further, I can find so substantive support for the CP 14/468 statement,
"Lorette, da. of Royce, da. and h. of Foubert de Douvres." Should this
have been written as "Lorette, da. of Royce, and h. of Foubert de Douvres"?

The Moriarty article [New England Hist. & Gen Journal, CV (1951) at 36]
gives marriage of John DE DOUVRES to Roese de Lucy, and their son
Fulbert DE DOUVRES's marriage to Isabel Briwere, and their daughter
Roese DE DOUVRES's marriage to Richard FitzRoy (illeg. son of King John).

In sum, I cannot find support for a marriage of Fulbert DE DOUVRES and
Roese and I am very much befuddled as to proper place of Lorette, wife
of William MARMION, in the DE DOUVRES family.

Dear Marilyn ~

Lora (or Lorette) de Dover, wife of William Marmion, Knt., of West
Tanfield, Yorkshire, was the daughter of Richard Fitz Roy (or de
Warenne, or de Chilham), of Chilham, Kent (died 1246), by Rose de Dover
(or Douvres).

Rose de Dover, wife of Richard Fitz Roy, in turn was the daughter and
heiress of Fulbert de Dover (died about 1204), of Chilham, Kent, by
Isabel, daughter of William Brewer (or Briwere).

Fulbert de Dover in turn was the son of John de Dover, died about 1198,
by Rohese, daughter of Geoffrey de Lucy.

The evidence for this descent is fully set forth by Mr. Moriarty in his
excellent article in NEHGR, 105 (1951): 36-42, which you've evidently
already seen. I also have a reference in my files to an article in
NEHGR, 119 (1965): 94-102, which you may find helpful. For Rohese
(de Lucy) de Dover's royal ancestry through her paternal grandmother,
Rohese of Boulogne, wife of Sir Richard de Lucy, see the newsgroup
archives.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
