Current names for old.

Can anyone advise me as to what name would be used for the following
medieval names if they arent as they were then,
and assuming that they are actually given names of a person.

(1) GUILLAUME (Found in Wijnbergen Roll)

(2) ARQUES (Found 'French arms and is an Ecclestiastic Arms ref.)

(3) HERESOL OR NERESOL (Found in The Bigot Roll)

thanks

Dear John ~

The modern English form of Guillaume would be William.

Arques is a place name, not a given name.

I don't recognize the given name, Heresol or Neresol, which is
presumably Continental in origin. The roll in question appears to date
from c. 1280, when Charles I, Count of Anjou, and Louis de Brienne,
Vicomte of Beaumont, were both living. The roll refers to your
individual as Neresol or Heresol de Batale. I note that his arms are
the same as found elsewhere for Robert de Champagne and Gui de
Vaugreneuse. Quite possibly therre is a connection between these
individuals.

Good luck in your sleuthing.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

As is mentioned, Guillaume is William in English. Here's a neat tool
online that I use: http://www.behindthename.com/

(2) ARQUES (Found 'French arms and is an Ecclestiastic Arms ref.)

Arques is a place name. It appears that there is either more than one
place named Arques, or that the place was in different governmental
jurisdictions at different times (I'm not too familiar with the
geography of France). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arques

(3) HERESOL OR NERESOL (Found in The Bigot Roll)

Heresol appears to be a name. There are arms granted to a Heresol de
Batale. http://perso.numericable.fr/~briantimms ... otBA06.htm
