Dear all,

I have a mention in 1194 at the Siege of Nottingham Castle of a Sir Foulchier de Grendon son of Serlo de Grendon. I am trying to find his "Coat of Arms"... Can any one advise me where I might have to look to find this please...

I am trying to find a connection between to distinguished Grendon families in the 1200's The de Grendon family of Warwickshire has a Coat of Arms of "Two Chevrons"..

My thanks,

Seasonal Greetings to you all.,

Jeff

No! 1194 is not much more than 50 years after coats of arms were
invented so I reckon you would be very lucky finding anything on this
chap's coat of arms.

Brian Timms' superb site gives information from many early rolls of
arms, though they are around 100 years later than the time you are
interested in. Try:

http://perso.numericable.fr/~briantimms ... lazons.htm

And in this list there are several Grendons, mostly with chevrons:

Argent two chevronels gules a label vairy argent and sable: Robert de
Grendon

Argent two chevrons gules: Robert de Grendon

Argent two chevrons gules: Ralph de Grendon

Or a chevron gules in dexter chief a martlet sable: John de Grendon

Vairy argent and sable a bendlet or: John de Grendon

It should be worth your while having a good look round the rest of his
site.

The seals are also interesting.
I just saw 2 days ago. the picture of the seal of Walter de Grendon, which
is interesting in the Catalogue of Seals by Ellis Roger Vol 1.
The description is as follow:
"The man in the moon. Within the horn of a slender crescent moon, a man in
tunic and hood walking carrying a bundle of sticks on his back in front is a
little dog with 2 stars above" dated 1335.
This doc. is available at the Nat. Archives doc E329/16.

ID=6703367&CATLN=6&accessmethod=5

An other one of Will. de Grendon (1359).Description:
In a beeded circle a shield not armorial containing a flaming* heart in
base, a fesse charged with 3 stars and in chief the initial W and G with a
tall cross between the rising above the shield.
* I think it 's flaming
doc. from Nat. Arch E329/452

I am also interested by the Grendon Family by the link with the Jorz in
Notts and Derbys.

Jean Jacques
