Nicholas Berry Lord of Berrynarbor and Martinhoe (?)

Legg inn av Theresa » 03 des 2006 19:18:51

I am looking for information on Nicholas Berry, his daughter Anne married
Philip Bowen. Any help would be appreciated.

I have looked at the Visitations of Devon and don't know if this is the
correct family.

from the tree it lists him as the son of Thomas Berry and unknown. b abt
1487 and he was married to (2nd) Elizabeth Bowden or could be Bawden. He
was also married 1st to Eglina or Ellen Berry daughter of John Berry of
Colleton, Esq. and Agnes Rayney.

Nicholas' Father was son of John Berry of Berrynarbor and Grandson of John
Berry of Berrynarbor (per the tree in the Visitation).

While searching for additional information I also came across the following:

Berry, of Berry Narbor, East Leigh, Lobb, Winscot, &c. &c. - It is probable
from the similarity of arms, that these families are from the same common
origin. Ralph de Bury possessed Bury Narbor in the reign of Henry III. The
name of the family and of the place was soon afterwards spelt Berry, and at
a later period Berrie. The heiress of the elder branch, which continued at
Berry Narbor till the death of Thomas Berrie in 1708, married Francis
Kirkham, Esq., who died in 1737. Co-heiresses of Penrise and Giffard, and
the heiress of Bowden, married into this family.

The Berrys of East Leigh were descended from the second son of Berry of
Berry Narbor, by the co-heiress of Giffard. On the death of the last of the
elder line of this branch (fn. 1) , which, by Sir William Pole, is called
Barry. East Leigh devolved to Thomas Berry, Esq., (younger brother of George
Berry of Lobb,) which Thomas died in 1802: his sister and heiress married
Boatfield, whose only child married Tuplin, and the co-heiresses of Tuplin
the Rev. John Torr and Francis Southerton, M. D.
A younger branch of Berry, descended from the third son of the coheiress of
Giffard, settled at Chittlehampton, and seems to have become extinct soon
after the visitation of 1620.

A younger branch of Berry, of East Leigh, settled at Lobb, in Braunton. The
younger brother of George Berry, of Lobb, Gent., who died in 1723, without
issue, became possessed of East Leigh, and removed thither.

Daniel Berry, a younger son of Berry, of Berry Narbor, was vicar of Molland,
as was his grandson of the same name. Sir John Berry, the eminent naval
officer in the reign of William III., whose monument is at Stepney, in
Middlesex, was son of the latter. Thomas Berry, Esq., of Crediton,
attorney-at-law, is descended from this branch.
John Berry, another younger son of the Berry-Narbor family, died rector of
Georgeham in 1649. His descendant, Mr. John Berry of Clovelly, died in 1788.
Sir Thomas Berry, Knt., of Northam, who died in 1698, without issue, was of
a younger branch of this family. I have not been able to learn that there
are any male descendants now in the county, except Mr. Berry of Crediton,
above mentioned.

Sorry everyone, Anne Bury daughter of Nicholas m. Gruffudd Bowen and was the
mother of Philip -

and Elizabeth Bowden of Bradwill was the First wife of Nicholas Bury not the
second wife.

Ancestrial Roots 8th Edition gives Nicholas' death as 1656. p171 (lineage
179-14).

Dear Theresa ~

You've identified the correct Berry family that is ancestral to the New
England immigrant, Griffith Bowen, Gentleman. The manor of
Berrynarbor, Devon descended to the Berry family by way of their
ancestors, the Penris (or Penrhys) family, whose arms they quartered.
I suspect that the Penris family of Berrynarbor, Devon was likely
descended from or close related to Richard de Penris, who married
Eleanor, daughter and co-heiress of Sir William de Camville (died
1338), 2nd Lord Camville.

For information of Sir William de Camville and his Penris heirs, see
Arch. Cambrensis, 6th Ser. 7(1) (1907): 108-118; 6th Ser. 9(1)
(1909): 178-179.

Thank you Douglas, I was wondering if anyone has been able to identify any
of the Mothers of this group besides Elizabeth and Eglina or Ellen Bury. I
have yet to find anything giving any to identify them, not even a first
name.

Secondly, do you know if there has been anything to prove that this line is
descended from Ralph de Bury? since they are suggesting that their arms are
similar to that of Ralph.

I'd be happy to keep digging if anyone can suggest a direction, but any
assistance would be appreciated.
