The descendants of Regicide John Dixwell, usually known as "James
Davids" after his flight to Connecticut, are well-traced in Alicia
Crane Williams, _Chase-Wigglesworth Genealogy_ (G.P.C., 1990), pp.
181-88. Williams, following all other available sources, gives John
Dixwell's parents as William and Elizabeth (Brent) Dixwell. See
_Dictionary of National Biography_ for similar statements (note,
however, the slightly ominous statement ... "In pedigrees of the family
he is usually ignored"):
(p. 130)

Verbatim copies of some of the Dixwell/ Davids deeds from New Haven CT
are included in _The Polyanthea: Or, A Collection of Interesting
Fragments_, beginning on p. 151.
(p. 151)
http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC1 ... 4-PA151,M1
In one particular indenture on p. 154, Dixwell/ Davids mentions a very
valuable clue: "any of the sons of my brother, Mark Dixwell,
deceased."
(p. 154)
http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC1 ... 4-PA154,M1
And a few pages later, an original letter mentions the daughters
(Elizabeth and Bennett) and sons (Heardson, William, and Basil) of his
brother Mark Dixwell, "of Broome, in the parish of Barham, in the
county of Kent, Esq."
So it seems clear that Mr. John Dixwell, alias James Davids, of New
Haven had a brother Mark Dixwell.
Turning now to two contemporary Visitations, the 1618/19 of
Northamptonshire, and the 1619 of Warwickshire, we are shocked to find
that William and Elizabeth (Brent) Dixwell had neither a son John nor a
son Mark (their children apparently were Charles, Brent, William,
Abigail, Katherine, and Elizabeth):
(p. 297)
http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC0 ... well+coton
(p. 86)
http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC0 ... A2-PA86,M1
The Warwickshire Visitation shows that William Dixwell's brother Edward
had a son James, aged 13 in 1619 -- this is a valuable clue when we
turn to the IGI --
Ponteland, Northumberland (all children of Edward Dixwell):
--Jacobus Dixwell, bapt. 23 January 1605
--Anna Dyxwell, bapt. 26 May 1607
--Marcus Dixwell, bapt. 26 Feb. 1609
--Abigail Dixwell, bapt. 7 April 1611
--Johannes Dixwell, bapt. 6 April 1613
--Charolus Dixwell, bapt. 20 March 1615
Here, then, is a family group that seems to meet our requirements
(having sons named John and Mark). It is clearly the family of Edward
Dixwell, son of Charles and Abigail, and BROTHER of William Dixwell who
married Elizabeth Brent. Jacobus [i.e., James] Dixwell baptized in
1605 would indeed be about 13 or 14 in 1619, as recorded in the
Warwickshire Visitation.
It seems clear that Regicide John Dixwell was a son of Edward, not
William, Dixwell.

I wonder if the baptismal date of 1613 is new (maybe someone with
internet access to ODNB wouldn't mind checking?). Note that this date
of baptism does not accord very well with his gravestone in New Haven
....
J. D. Esq.
Deceased March the 18th,
In the 82d Year of his Age,
1688-9.

If born in 1613, he would be 76, not 82, in 1689. However, he seems to
have been quite secretive after removing to New England, and possibly
did not even tell his wife his age, and she just knew he was "very aged
at death," and gave an approximate age for the tombstone.
