Reliability of Stirnet site?

Legg inn av Dave » 26 nov 2006 21:36:06

Hello,

Briefly, can anyone here give an impression of how reliable the Stirnet
site is for relationships?

I wonder in general, as the author of the site seems to have made a
good effort to trawl sources. But before casting my own line, I would
like to hear some other opinons.

Specifically (but perhaps beyond the scope of this list), I am
interested in the Edward Sheldon link to the Constable line as the move
to Agnes Gascoigne and Alexander de Mowbray and then back to Anna
Yaroslavna. Can this line be trusted?

*On the nearer end, just in case someone knows - I am trying to find in
Anne Burt (reportedly baptised 8 Aug 1697 in St Andrew's, Holburn,
London and md. Richard Coles in 1719 in Watlington, Oxon) is indeed the
daughter of Thomas Birt and Elizabeth Sheldon (dau of Edward Sheldon
and Catherine Constable).

Many thanks,

Dave

Let him speak for himself:

"All of the information in this database is provided in good faith but
on the basis of 'Errors & Omissions Excepted'. We have certain
aspirations for this database but we make no claims for it other than in
respect of our good faith in pulling together data provided by others.
For most of the data, reliance has been placed on the integrity of the
sources used, some of which are known to contain errors, and no attempt
has been made to provide independent 'proof'. However, we are making
genuine effort to make this database the best of its type and are trying
to correct the inconsistencies & other errors found in our sources. We
welcome corrections & constructive advice and are pleased that a number
of serious genealogists are using this site to help identify & correct
some of the many genealogical errors that are being propagated
elsewhere."

They started off by using Burke's many volumes, knowing their inaccuracy
but grateful for the opportunity to place massive quantities of data
quickly on the internet. In recent years this has snowballed with
corrections fed in to them and their own references to better works.
I'm impressed with what they ave done but I do not think they would
pretend to be of the standard of the classic secondary books which
really have endeavoured to find contemporary documents to refer to.

Have a look at Leo van de Pas' appraisal of the many texts to get a
flavour of what sorts of things are available:

A tad out of the scope of this newsgroup?
