NORMANS AGAIN!

Legg inn av Gjest » 19 nov 2006 12:46:01

Dear All,

Can anyone gratify me with a response, negative or positive?

I'm researching the Norman Invasion of Britain, and whilst I maintain that
this was undoubtedly an invasion of a people that had been Frankified, the
Norman invasion was precisely another invasion of the Norse into England.
William had trounced his liege Lord's army, the French king, in a battle and set
his sights on the luscious plains of England.

I think he had a more subtle problem. He and his forbears and people
were a conquering race; they battled everywhere and with their energy
tended to conquer. The problem was that of rewarding his major
associates who otherwise would start fighting among themselves and,
worse, against him. The chance of the English crown was enormously
attractive to resolve this and to channel the warlike energies of his
people. The conquest was relatively easy and, as the Domesday book
shows, he managed to put his companions into nearly all the places of
power in England.

I don't think the luscious plains of England were much of an attractions
as there aren't many; what was an attraction was the hunting country
which was protected against poachers by some truly vicious laws. Only
the sovereign could hunt wild animals, unless free warren was explicitly
given for hunting on a tenant-in-chief's own demesne.
