I've mentioned Adam Otley of Lynn several times. My interest in him
was aroused by a small addition in the 2006 edition of Gary Boyd
Roberts' _Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants_. In the discussion of Mr.
John Humphrey of Lynn, Gary had added a brief sentence, (something
like:) "Adam Ottley of Lynn may have married a daughter of John
Humphrey." Although Robert Charles Anderson's _Great Migration_ sketch
of John Humphrey does not mention the marriage of Humphrey's daughter
to Otley, _Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County_,
2:394-95 mentions that "when ye sd [John] Humfrey went for England [he]
Left his son in Law otly Att ye house." See

http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/salem/wit ... ex394.html

(EQC records also show that Adam Otley acted many times as attorney for
Mr. Humphrey in the 1640s; the first mention of Mr. Adam Otley was
about Jan. 1641).

In 1916, the NEHGR published a note showing that administration on the
goods of Adam Otley, "late in parts beyond the seas," was granted to
the widow Elizabeth in 1648.

http://books.google.com/books?vid=0ICNu ... adam+otley

The 1634/5 London Visitation shows Adam Otley, gent., of London--and
his wife "Dorothey dau'r of Lawrence Cranage of Cheshire"--as the
parents of a son also called Adam.

http://books.google.com/books?vid=LCCNs ... ce+cranage

The 1623 Shropshire Visitation gives further information, showing that
Adam Otley the younger was aged 3 in 1623 (hence born in 1620), and
that his mother, Dorothy, had been previously married to a certain
Richard Mackworth:

http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC5 ... dam+oteley

Mr. William Crowne of New England, an associate of Thomas Temple in the
Nova Scotia venture, married an Agnes Mackworth (b. ca. 1617 ?),
daughter of Richard Mackworth (d. 1617) by his wife Dorothy Cranage
(Richard and Dorothy were supposedly married in the year 1600):

http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC0 ... ce+cranage

Richard and Dorothy (Cranage) Mackworth were also the parents of Col.
Humphrey Mackworth, a parliament man and Governor of Shrewsbury in
1646. The extracted IGI for St Andrew's, Holborn, London, very
interestinly shows:

--Adam Oattley, son of Adam and "Dothie," bapt. 26 Oct. 1620
--Lawrence Cranage, son of John and Elizabeth, bapt. 27 Feb. 1621
--Thomas Mackworth, son of Humphrey and Ann, bapt. 31 July 1627

Note that even if Dorothy Cranage Mackworth married for the first time
in 1600, she could certainly still be the mother of Adam Otley (who was
born in 1620).

And if Adam Otley's wife Elizabeth was also born about 1620, she could
certainly be the daughter of John Humphrey, Esq., who was said to be
aged 26 in the 1623 Dorset Visitation:

See also my 2003 posting on Dame Aggnes Buckleaf:

J.P. Earwaker, _History of the Ancient Parish of Sandbach, Co.
Chester_, p. 177 (extracts from parish register of Holmes Chapel):

1622[-3]. Dame Aggnes Buckleaf [Buckley] late wyffe of Lawrence
Cranage whas Buried the xxiiijth of Januarie.

footnote f: "Dame Agnes Buckley, or Bulkeley, was the daughter of
Thomas Needham, of Cranage and Shavington, Esq. (see that pedigree
under Cranage). She became the second wife of Sir Richard Bulkeley, of
Beaumaris and Cheadle, Knt., by whom she had eight sons and two
daughters (see _East Cheshire_, vol. i. p. 182). After her husband's
death in 1573, she married, secondly, Lawrence Cranage, Esq., who
predeceased her. In her will, made 12th March, 1621-22, and proved in
the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 14th March, 1622-23 (25 Swann),
she desired 'to be buried in Holmes Chapel in the county of Chester
where divers of my ancestors lie buried.' She speaks of her son
(really her stepson) John Cranage, then of London, grocer, her daughter
Eaton, her son George Bulkeley, and her daughters Anges and Phoebe
[Bulkeley]. In Harl. MS. 2153 f. 194b will be found a copy of the
confirmation of a coat of arms and a crest, made to the above-named
John Cranage, of London, grocer, by Sir Richard St. George, Norroy King
of Arms, dated 22nd August, 1606. from the pedigree there given and
one in Harl. MS.1535 f. 97, it appears that Dames Agnes Bulkeley had by
Lawrence Cranage an only daughter and heir, Dorothy."

light of the following baptism ...

Thanks. I believe _Records of the Governor and Company of the
Massachusetts-Bay_ has stuff on a scandal Adam Ottley caused in the
1640s by lying about something (or was it forging a signature?).

I had a chance briefly last night to check the Otley references in
_Records of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay_ (some of
his appearances are indexed under 'Oatley' for anyone who wants to
check them). He is in the records between 1641 and about 1644, and was
fined on the first appearance for "concealment" [whatever that is].
Then, when John Humphrey left for England later in 1641, Mr. Adam
Oatley was to pay part of the fine to Humphrey in lieu of Humphrey
receiving payment for some services rendered to the government. This
transaction was suggested by Humphrey himself, so perhaps he was not on
the best terms with his "son-in-law" (or was this a surreptitious means
of forgiving the debt?).

There was no mention of an Abraham Otley in the _Mass. Bay Recs._.
Also, there was no mention of Adam Otley's lying (or forging, whichever
it was)--but I see that _Records and Files of Essex Quarterly Courts_
mentions Otley "forging Capt. Hawking's name" in August 1644:

http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/salem/wit ... ex070.html

The EQC records have one record in which appears the abbreviated name
"Abra. Oatley" ... which is probably a mistake and accounts for the
belief that there was an "Abraham Otley" (in addition to Adam Otley) at
Lynn:

http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/salem/wit ... ex394.html

Below are all the pages mentioning Otley from EQC records (note all the
connections to John Humphrey, Esq.) ...

http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/salem/wit ... ex317.html

I also was able to check the _HOP_ biography of Richard Bulkeley, first
husband of Dame Agnes Buckleaf. Agnes was his second wife, and mother
of four sons and two daughters by him, rather than eight sons and two
daughters (as per the Sandbach history). This eases the chronology a
bit and means that her only daughter (Dorothy Cranage) by her second
husband needn't have been born immediately after the death of Bulkeley
(who died in 1572). Agnes was an interesting woman, accused of
adultery in the last years of her first husband's life, and tried for
poisoning him (poison was found hidden in her chest beneath her
slippers, but she was acquitted by the jury).

I went back and looked at this reference, and it is a list of people
(including Samuel Maverick) who helped Thomas Owen escape from prison
and then concealed either the fact or the prisoner. Adam Otley was in
trouble for "concealing." Here is the tidbit on Owen from Savage's
_Genealogical Dictionary_:

[OWEN,] THOMAS, Boston, ar. co. 1639, imprison. 1641, perhaps unjustly,

Also, is this the same Adam and Dorothy (Cranage) (Mackworth) Otley
