William I de Lancaster, Lord of Kendal, son of Gilbert.

On some charters, his names are followed by "viz. Swartahof".

It sounds like an old way of saying "black headed" but I dare not guess.

Can anyone confirm the meaning?

Best Regards

Andrew,

This may be irrelevant to your question, however, "Svarthof" is
mentioned in a text on topics from old Nordic literature and
archeology. A section is quoted from an old piece of literature
"Voluspá", see page 25,

http://www.arkeologi.uu.se/ark/educatio ... rgtext.PDF

"All the seeresses are descended from Vidolf,
all the wizards from Vilmed,
and the seid-practiers from Svarthof,
all the giants come from Ymir."

Most of the text is in Swedish, and it is stated by the author that
the name Svarthof is unknown to him from other sources.

You will notice an English summary at the end of the linked pdf-file
above.
