Lorraine-Geddes question

Legg inn av John Brandon » 14 nov 2006 22:01:39

**This question doesn't concern my own ancestry, but may apply to many
of my cousins, descendants of my great-uncle Robert Macy of Hayworth,
Illinois, whose wife was a granddaughter maternally of Gen. James
Lorraine Geddes of Ames, Iowa.

We know that James Lorraine Geddes was son of Capt. Alexander Geddes by
his wife Elizabeth Careless, who were married at St. Cuthbert's in
Edinburgh, 17 Jan. 1826 (per extracted IGI).

The following seems like a promising lead ... a monumental inscription
in King's Chapel, Gibraltar:

"James Geddes, Assistant-Surgeon, fell a victim to the malignant fever
raging in the Garrison, 25 Oct., 1804; also Wilhelmina, his w.[ife],
dau. of James Loraine, Esq., of Angelraw, Berwickshire, who shared his
fate, 2 Nov., 1804. Erected by their eldest s.[on], Col. Wm. Geddes,
C.B., Bengal Artillery."

Can anybody tell me more about possible descendants of James Geddes and
his wife, Wilhelmina Loraine?

This birth/ baptism is interesting:

Saint Marylebone, London

--Alexr. Geddes, son of James and Wilhelmina, 20 December 1800
[christened Jan. 1801]

This family does seem promising, as I note other descendants with the
sequential names "Loraine Geddes" ...

After checking some notes and thinking about it last night, I think
this placement must be correct.

The biography of J.L. Geddes in the _Dictionary of American Biography_
specifically states that he was in India "with his uncle." Presumably
this would be Col. William Geddes of the British Army, who had a child
born in Calcutta as late as 1840 ...

Also, note that the Rootsweb pedigree of Wilhelmina Loraine shows her
mother to be a Patricia Home. The name Patricia was used extensively
in the family of James Loraine Geddes. The only two children of
Alexander Geddes baptized at St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, were

--James Loraine Geddes, son of Alexander Geddes and Elizabeth Carlless,
bapt. 19 March 1827
--Hannah Patricia Geddes, daughter of Alexander Geddes and Elizabeth
Carlless, bapt. 17 Feb. 1829

Gen. James L. Geddes had a daughter Patricia Geddes (Mrs. Garlock).
And Robert Macy had daughter Miss Patricia Macy, and granddaughters
Mary Patricia Macy (Mrs. Martin) and Patricia Buchanan (Mrs. Maurer).
