This family was closely connected with Southwick Priory, with no fewer
than 34 entries in the Cartulary. A member of the family was one of
the Founders of the priory. The documents of the greatest substance
are as follows:

I, 1

2 August 1133: Concession by Henry I for the souls of his father and
mother, his brother William and his ancestors... of the church of St
Mary, Portchester, with lands, tithes and all appurtenances. Also
concession of the gift of William de Pontearch' and his wife Constance
of the manor Candover and of one hide in Southwick, and of one hide in
Applestead which William bought of Ivo de Pantulf for the church's use
with the king's consent etc

I, 11

Notification by Robert de Pontearch to Bishop Jocelin and all the
clergy of the diocese of Sarum of his concession in alms to the canons
of Portchester of the church of Swindon and confirmation of all his
father's gifts etc, circa 1142-1150

I, 18

Confirmation by Robert de Pontearch for the salvation of [the souls of]
King Henry [I] and William de Pontearch his father, his lady mother,
lords and ancestors, and of himself, his wife, children and kindred, of
the gift made by his father of... the churches of Wanstead, Shalden,
Portchester, Candover and Swindon, etc, c1155-1171

(NB a couple of the charters refers to William de Pont de l'Arche
having made his gifts "with the consent of his sons, so presumably
Robert had at least one brother.)

III 199

Gift in free alms by Juliana, wife of Robert de Berkeley, with her
husband's consent, for the soul of her father, Sir Robert de
Pontearcharum, who is buried in Southwick church etc, c1190-1215
