Hello All,

Matthew de Lovaine, of Little Easton, Essex (d. bef June
1258) and his family have been a frequent topic of discussion.
His wife was Muriel (d. aft 1274), but her identity to date has
not been ascertained beyond her first name [1].

There are a number of manors or smaller landholdings in
Suffolk in which Muriel and her husband had an interest, as
noted in a review of the Suffolk feet of fines. The records of
tenure of one or more of these may assist in resolving Muriel's
identity. I have copied below those entries which indicate that
Muriel (and earlier, she and Mathew) had an interest.

A. Record of fines dated 19 Hen III [between 18 Oct 1234 and
17 Oct 1235]:
' 62. Henry, Abbot of St. Edmunds v. Mathew de Luvein and
Muriella his wife in Rattlesden (Robert son of Richard
appon' clam'). ' [Cal. Suffolk Fines, p. 33]
' 154. Angot de Hulmo v. Michael [sic] de Luvein and Muriel
his wife in Brokes (William de Hulmo and Edmund his
son appon' clam') ' [Cal. Suffolk Fines, p. 37] [2]

B. Record of fines dated 42 Hen III [between 18 Oct 1257 and
17 Oct 1258]:
' 6. Benedict de Blakeham v. Mathew de Luneyn and Muriella
his wife in Lackingeheth. ' [Cal. Suffolk Fines, p. 58][2]

C. Record of a fine dated 50 Hen III [between 18 Oct 1265 and
17 Oct 1266]:
' 138. William de Thornegg and Ida his wife v. Muriella de
Loveyn in Brokes, Claydon and Rubrok. ' [Cal. Suffolk
Fines, p. 64][2]

Of these, I have found a related record only of the holding
in Brokes on the National Archives site, which relates to the
last fine noted above. This was an inspeximus in which Muriel
'de Luveyn' confirmed a grant on 23 April 1270:

' E 40/3735
Confirmation by Muriel de Luveyn, by inspeximus, of the
grant by William de Thornhegg,' to the canons of SS. Peter and
Paul, Ipswich, in frank almoin, of land in Brokes at a yearly
rent of 1d. in exchange for other land in Brokes, abutting on
the high road from Wyvelesdone and upon Aldegateweye, a
messuage and a meadow, the said William paying 12d. yearly,
dated St. George's day, 54 Henry III.
Witnesses to this confirmation:- Sirs Geoffrey de Badele
and John de Luvetot, Baldwin de Pesehale and others (named).
(Suff.) ' [3]

Muriel's ancestry is of interest to a wideranging number of
descendants: she was an ancestress of the Douglas of Drumlanrig.
and Sandilands in Scotland, while in England her progeny include
the Lords Despenser, Furnival, the Earls of Devon (Courtenay),
and many more too numerous to mention. Should anyone have
further documentation or suggestions for additional research
concerning these lands, or Muriel's connection with same, that
would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

John
