Hello All,

The account in Scots Peerage for the Earls of Fife gives to
Duncan, earl of Fife (d. 1204) as issue ' three sons and one
daughter: -

1. Malcolm, his successor.
2. Duncan [husband of 'Aliz Corbet', father of Earl Malcolm].
3. David [ancestor of the Strathbogie Earls of Atholl].
4. ____, a daughter, name unknown [Ada, who m. Roger de
Merlay]. ' [1]

There was another daughter, previously identified by Andrew
MacEwen: Annabela, wife of Hugh de Moravia (d. before 1222) and
ancestress of a widespread progeny [2].

Perhaps not of as great import in terms of known descendants,
there were in fact two sons of Earl Duncan (d. 1204) not
identified in the SP article. A charter of Malcolm, son of Earl
Duncan (and earl after his father's death), undated but est. by
William Angus as occurring before 1199, grants the church of North
Berwick and other lands to the nuns of North Berwick. The charter
reads, in part:

' Universis sancte matris ecclesie filiis clericis et
laicis presentibus et futuris Malcolmus filius comitis
Dunecani salutem; Sciatis me concessisse et dedisse...
........
His testibus domino patre meo comite Dunecano domina
mea comitissa Ela matre mea Adam patruo meo Duncano
David Willelmo Johanne fratribus meis .... ' [3]

The correct family is identified, Earl Duncan and his wife the
Countess Ela being identified as Malcolm's parents. His uncle
Adam, and brothers Duncan and David are known from the SP article:
however, William and John are evidently younger brothers, not
previously identified (in SP). Angus was aware of this, noting,
'The Scots Peerage omits William and John from its account of the
children of the fifth Earl.' [4]

Unfortunately, with names like William and John, this
'discovery' may not assist in unraveling the parentage of the
Countess Ela. Would that one son had been named Reginald...

Cheers,

John *
