Alan Durward and the earldom of Atholl

Dear Will, James, et al.,

On the subject of Alan Durward and the earldom of Atholl, we
have two versions supplied in Scots Peerage:

1. The one I've found most conventional, given in the article
concerning Isabella, Countess of Atholl (elder daughter
of Earl Henry of Atholl):

' It is not known when Countess Isbella died, but she was
apparently dead before 1237, when her son [Patrick] is
called Earl of Atholl. According to a recent writer,
the Countess Isabella married, secondly, Alan Durward,
who was Earl of Atholl in 1233-35, as formerly noted.
It is assumed that he was Earl in her right until her
death in 1236. ' [1]

2. There is the version which Matthew Hammond finds "most
likely" [2], as set forth in Scots Peerage concerning the
issue of Earl Malcolm of Atholl (by his wife Hextilda of
Tynedale, or not, re: which see prior SGM threads):

' The Liber Vitae [of Durham] gives as sisters of Henry:
(1) Bedoch; (2) Cristina; and (3) Margaret. Bedoch
apparently was married and had a son, whose name is
written 'Kelehathonin'. Another sister, perhaps
Cristina or Margaret, seems to have married Thomas of
Lundin, the 'Ostiarius' or Doorward, as in a charter
(dated perhaps in 1202) by Earl Henry, he refers to
his nephew Colin, while Sir Colin of Lundyn appears
at a later date as witness to a charter by Conan,
son of Earl Henry, and he was a younger brother of
Alan the Durward, who held that office form 1233 to
1275. ' [3]

The chart of the family given by Hammond [p. 138] is shown
below (essentially that portion dealing with the Atholl connection).
The weakness of Alan Durward's claim to the Earldom is
apparent, and - if the chart is in fact correct - was only as good
as Patrick's minority (and royal acquiescence) permitted it to be.

Cheers,

John
