**Don't mind me -- just reposting these items (want to make sure
they're in the Rootsweb Archive) ...

In the _Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography_, Capt. Robert Higginson of
Virginia is said to have married "about 1625" to "Joanna Torkesy." See

The Higginson-Torksey marriage settlement has been abstracted on A2A:

There is a "submitted" entry in the IGI, a marriage 9 Oct. 1604 between
John Torksey and Mary Culverwell at Cherry Burton, Yorkshire. Then,
the 1619 Warwickshire Visitation shows William Holbech of Fillongley
married secondly to Mary, daughter of Nicholas Culverwell of Cherry
Burton (her first marriage to Torksey seems to have been left out of
the equation). These Culverwells had many colonial connections ...

One entry from A2A shows Torkseys and Holbechs associating together at
Fillongley, co. Warwick:

A glance at the ODNB article on the Culverwell family indicates it was
Samuel Culverwell who was minister at Cherry Burton, Yorks., and hence
presumably Mary (Culverwell) (Torksey) Holbech's father (but her
grandfather _was_ Nicholas Culverwell).

The mother of Jabez and Alexander Whitaker of Virginia was a Culverwell
from this same family.

_Ancestors of American Presidents_, by Gary Boyd Roberts, shows Robert
Higginson and Joanna "Tokesy" as ancestors of presidents William Henry
Harrison and Benjamin Harrison.

Remember that the baptisms below are in the Solihull, Warwickshire,
register (taken from extracted IGI) ...

Elizabethe Overton, bapt. 5 Nov. 1592
Richarde Overton, bapt. 14 July 1594
Isabell Overton, bapt. 1 May 1596
Valentine Overton, bapt. 7 June 1597

Some other Solihull baptisms that might be apropos:

Thoms. Higgenson, bapt. 29 Oct. 1564
Isabell Higgenson, bapt. 15 Nov. 1569
Robarte Higgenson, bapt. 2 April 1601
Anna Higgenson, dau. Thomas, bapt. 27 Dec. 1608
Isabell Higgenson, dau. Thomas, bapt. 3 June 1610
[there are other Higgenson baptisms I haven't listed ...]

Keep in mind how close Solihull is to Fillongley (Bedworth is even
closer). I speculate that Thomas (bapt. 1564) is the father of Capt.
Robert of Va. (who is the 1601 baptism). Isabel (bapt. 1569) would be
the right age to be wife of Rev. Valentine Overton(whose children begin
to be born in 1592). It is very unfortunate that the earlier part of
the Solihull parish register gives no parents for the baptized
children.

Also, Berkswell is smack between Solihull and Coventry ...

Six or seven miles northeast of Fillongley, Warwickshire, is Barwell,
Leics.

http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi? ... ale=200000

Going through Nichols' _Leicestershire_ yesterday, I noted a minister,
Rev. John Torksey, who died at Barwell ca. 1612 or 13 (I wasn't paying
much attention). He has an M.I. at Barwell with a Latin verse, put up
by his wife (whose name isn't even mentioned). In fact, there are no
biographical details of Rev. Torksey himself, and no mention of
children. But there *were* two Torksey children baptised at Barwell in
this period, as the extracted IGI shows us:

Samuell Torcksaye, son of John, 15 June 1606
Samuell Torksye, son of John, 20 April 1608

The submitted marriage record of John Torksey to Mary Culverwell claims
a date of 9 Oct. 1604 at Cherry Burton. This might just work, if a
daughter Joanna was born immediately after the marriage (say
July/August 1605), and the first Samuel (perhaps a sickly or premature
child) born a little less than a year later.

Worth keeping in mind, I suppose ...

Nichols' _Leicestershire_, vol. 4, part 2, sub "Barwell," is very
suggestive on this connection.

p. 475:

"The son and heir of Samuel Culverwell, about the year 1613, sold this
manor, with the advowson of the church, to sir William Roberts, of
Sutton Chainell, knight, who now(1622) holds the same" [citing Burton,
p. 33].

p. 478 [list of Rectors]:

John Torksey, 1588; died 1613.

p. 479 [Monumental Inscriptions]:

[I don't find any other Torksey monuments.]
