New GEN-MED mailing list software

Legg inn av Don Stone » 24 okt 2006 20:08:10

<>As of about three hours ago, the RootsWeb GEN-MEDIEVAL mailing list is
being handled by Mailman, the GNU mailing list manager. I have set the
list parameters to match as closely as possible the behavior of
GEN-MEDIEVAL under the previous mailing list manager, SmartList.

Messages are now addressed To GEN-MEDIEVAL@rootsweb.com, rather than To
GEN-MEDIEVAL-L@rootsweb.com. Some people who have set up their mail
reader to use a filter to send all incoming GEN-MEDIEVAL mail to a
special folder (named, e.g., Inbox-GenMed) may need to adjust the
filter. (This practice of filtering allows you to avoid intermixing of
mailing list messages with personal email messages directed to you.)

Now for the first time, messages gated from the Usenet newsgroup
soc.genealogy.medieval have the Newsgroups header preserved. This means
that GEN-MEDIEVAL readers can now filter out cross-posted newsgroup
messages. For example, incoming messages whose Newsgroups header
contains alt.history.british or rec.games.chess.politics can be sent to
a folder labeled Inbox-ProbablyWorthless. (Conversely, the To header is
preserved for GEN-MEDIEVAL messages gated to soc.genealogy.medieval.) <>

As before, the default for GEN-MEDIEVAL replies is that replies go just
to the author of the message. To send replies to the list, use Reply
All and delete whichever addresses you don't want. When replying to
messages which originated with the newsgroup, PLEASE do not send replies
to both the GEN-MEDIEVAL list and the soc.genealogy.medieval newsgroup;
delete one or the other of these addresses (the reply will get to the
deleted address via gating).

Finally, as before, the co-listowner currently on duty can be reached at
GEN-MEDIEVAL-admin@rootsweb.com.
