Tattershalls of Wiltshire & Perkyns of Ufton Court, Berkshir

I would appreciate hearing from anyone interested in the recusant families
of Tattershall (of Stapleford, Wiltshire; Finchampstead, Berkshire; and Brook
(in Bramshaw), Hampshire; and Perkyns (of Ufton Court and Brimpton, Berkshire;
and Brook (in Bramshaw), Hampshire.

The connection between these families is the common ancestor Anne Welles,
daughter of Thomas Welles of Bambridge by his wife Mary Mompesson. Anne was
alive as late as 1586 and was living at Ufton Court. She married (1) William
Perkyns (1502-1558), Gent., of Brimpton, Gentleman Usher of Cardinal Pole; and
(2) between 1558 & 1562 George Tattershall (d. by 1586).

Her eldest son Francis Perkyns (d. 1615) was the father of (1) Francis
Perkyns of Ufton Court and (2) Edmund Perkyns (fl. 1660) of Brook (in Bramshaw),
Hampshire.

By her second husband Anne (Welles) Perkyns-Tattershall was the mother of
(1) George Tattershall (of age by 1586 & d. 1646) of Stapleford, Wiltshire; and
(2) Edmund Tattershall (of age by 1586 & d. between 1631 and 1636) of Brook
(in Bramshaw), Hampshire.

Edmund Tattershall, by his wife Katherine (daughter of Thomas Buryton (d.
1603), Gent., of Streatley, Berkshire; by his wife Joan Wyer), was the father of
(1) Peter Tattershall (alive 1636), Gent., of Chideock, Dorset; and (2)
Lawrence Tattershall, Gent., of Odstock, Wiltshire.

Lawrence and his brother Peter sold land together (apparently part of an
inheritance) in 1636. Lawrence was listed as a recusant and an adherent of the
King in 1646, on a list alongside his uncle George Tattershall of Stapleford.
The lists mentions that George's means and parsonage at Stapleford were
sequestered by a collector for Parliament, and that George's widow petitioned
for relief in London. Lawrence Tattershall was apparently alive as late as
1658 when his nephew Edmund Smith, planter, of Newtown Hundred, St. Mary's
County, Maryland quitclaimed his right to land to his uncle Lawrence of Odtsock.

Lawrence Tattershall, Gent., of Odstock was the father of four known
children [all Catholic]:

1. John Tattershall, Gent., of Odstock (bur. 2 May 1696)
m. Anne --------- (bur. 16 Jul. 1698)

2. Sarah Tattershall, Lady of Sarum Manor (in Newport Hundred), Charles
County, Maryland
m. John Pile (d. 1675/6), Gent., of Sarum, Charles County. [Immigrated to
Maryland in 1648.]

3. Mary Tattershall [Transported to Maryland by John and Sarah Pile in
1648.]
m. (1) before 3 Dec. 1651 to Lieut.-Col. John Jarboe (d. 1674) of Newtown
Hundred, St. Mary's County, Maryland.
m. (2) between 24 May 1675 and 4 Mar. 1675/6 to Stephen Gough (d. 1700) of
Newtown Hundred, St. Mary's County, Maryland.

4. William Tattershall, Gent., of Bretton's Bay (in Newtown Hundred), St.
Mary's County. [Transported to Maryland by John and Sarah Pile in 1648.]
Born ca. 1637.
Died testate between 3 May and 12 Jun. 1674.
Married Anne Lewger, daughter of John Lewger, chaplain of Lord Baltimore.

Arabella Fermor Perkins, on the page John Brandon linked to, was a
noted beauty of her time, and the subject of Pope's poem, "The Rape of
the Lock". Sir Christopher Parkins is believed to be part of this
family. See the New Oxford DNB.

I am interested in knowing if Sir William Perkins, the last person
hung, drawn, and quartered, under the medieval law of treason, was
from this family.

Steven C. Perkins
NOT from the Ufton Court Perkins family
