Re: Genealogy of Alice Spence Locke, wife of Sir William Loc
Dear John ~
As always, good work.
I believe the Byron-Clayton-Colwick connection behind the Spence family
leads back to a valid descent from William Huntingfield, the Magna
Carta baron. I outlined the link between the Huntingfield and Colwick
families in my book, Magna Carta Ancestry. The later generations
involving the Colwick and Byron families can be found in other
secondary sources.
This matter deserves further research.

Re: Genealogy of Alice Spence Locke, wife of Sir William Loc
Hi Douglas,
Unfortunately, I believe the Byron connection of the Spences comes in a
couple of generations after Alice who married Sir William Locke. See
the Norfolk Visitation (where, however, Alice's husband is incorrectly
called Thomas, rather than William):
http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC0 ... ish+spence
I believe the Cavendish family had a line of descent from the
Odingsells family. Would this entail a descent from Henry II, by any
chance?
Also, do you know anything of Sir Godfrey Stratton, said in the 1530
Sussex Visitation (no longer available on Google) to be ancestral to
Roger Cavendish, father of Alice Spence Locke's mother? I couldn't
find any trace of Godfrey Stratton on Google, but the names "Godfrey"
and "Stratton" made me think of the Luttrell family. The A2A extracts
I posted just now imply that these latter-day Spences were descendants
of a Stratton family.

Dear John ~
Here are several weblinks which discuss the connection between the
Colwick and Byron families:
http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/articles ... byron1.htm
http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/articles ... khall1.htm
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi ... h&id=I5165
The third weblink above sets forth the specific descent of the Byron
family from William de Huntingfield, the Magna Carta baron. This
descent needs further documentation, but I believe it is sound.
When you have a moment, John, perhaps you can tell us which American
colonists, if any, descend from Alice Spence, wife of Sir William
Locke.

Margaret Locke, wife of Francis Willoughby of Boston, in the following
line:
Sir William Locke (ca. 1486-1548 +) m. Alice Spence (ca. 1490-1522)
--Thomas Locke (1515-1556) m. Mary Long (ca. 1520-1550 +)
--Matthew Locke (say 1553-Jun 1599) m. Margaret Allen (bp. 8 May
1560-25 Aug. 1624)
--William Locke (bp. 17 Aug 1589-1664) m. Susanna Cole (say 1593-1670
+)
--Margaret Locke (ca. 1630-2 Feb 1683) m. Dep. Gov. Francis Willoughby

Re: Genealogy of Alice Spence Locke, wife of Sir William Loc
Here is my original posting on this topic, just to refresh memories:
Looking at the ahnentafel (
http://users.erols.com/rlward1/ahnentafel.html ) of Robert Leigh Ward,
a respected genealogist who has published in the American periodicals,
I noticed his numbers 28080 and 28081, Sir William Locke and his wife
Alice *Spencer*, ancestors of Francis1 Willoughby of New England.
28080. Sir William LOCKE b. ca. 1486 London, England; m. Alice SPENCER
bef. 1515 Merton, Surrey, England; d. aft. 1548 London, England.
28081. Alice SPENCER b. ca. 1490 London, England; m. Sir William LOCKE
bef. 1515 Merton, Surrey, England; d. 1522 London, England.
Mr. Ward's list gives William Locke's parents, #56160 Thomas Locke and
his wife, #56161 Joanna Wilcocks, but skips over the parentage of Alice
Spencer (the next number in the list is #56176).
It looks like Alice Spencer's parentage is given on p. 100 of the 1530
Sussex Visitation ...
http://books.google.com/books?vid=LCCN0 ... J&pg=PA1...
Her family name was apparently really Spence, rather than Spencer, and
her mother was a member of the Cavendish family.
*******
The Sussex Visitation really does state Alice was wife of "Sir William
Locke," not "Sir Thomas," as in the Norfolk Visitation. Pity the
Google link has gone dead ...

Byron-Colwick-Huntingfield Descent
Dear John ~
Thank you for your prompt response. Much appreciated.
My files indicate that Margaret Byron (died 1486), wife of William
Atherton, Knt.,and Robert Harcourt, K.G., has the Byron-Colwick
connection in her ancestry. The following weblink gives her descent:
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi ... style=TEXT
Margaret Byron is ancestral to the following 17th Century New World
colonists:
Thomas Bressey, Thomas Owsley, James Taylor.
My files indicate that Ellen Byron (died before 1467), wife of Walter
Blount, K.G., 1st Lord Mountjoy, likewise has the Byron-Colwick
connection in her ancestry. Her descent can be found at the following
weblink:
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi ... style=TEXT
Ellen Byron is ancestral to the following 17th Century New World
colonists:
Gabriel, Roger & Sarah Ludlow, John Oxenbridge
If the Byron-Colwick-Huntingfield descent can be proven, it would give
all of these colonists a valid new descent from William de
Huntingfield, the Magna Carta baron. I imagine that there are
additional colonists who share a descent from the Byron and Colwick
families.
