Hello All,
An interesting pedigree of the Girlington family has come to my attention,
significantly more detailed (both as to early and later generations) than that
in the Harleian series (HSP 16, Visitation of Yorkshire). This is found in
Collectanea Topographica et Genealogica [1], which is (sporadically) available
online courtesy of GoogleBooks.
In addition to the direct Girlington line, the notation in this pedigree
that the mother of William Girlington (2nd husband of Katherine Hildyard) was
"... dau. of .... Catterick of Stanwick" brought about the location of William
Brown's article in YAJ on 'the Catterick Brass'. This article includes a not
overly detailed pedigree of the Catterick family, and some helpful details
from the IPM of John Catterick dated 6 Oct 18 Edw IV (1478), indicating that
his son and heir John Catterick was then aged 30 and more [2].
This chronology works well with the Girlington family as far as is known.
Given that William Girlington and Katherine Hildyard's daughter Isabel (wife of
Christopher Kelke) was likely born say 1495, and William (a younger son) was
born say 1465-1475, his mother NN Catterick can be reasonably placed as having
been born say 1435-1450, which would make her most likely a sibling of the
younger John Catterick, and a daughter of the elder John Catterick by his wife
Lucy Borough, or Burgh [3].
This connection opens up a wide ranging Yorkshire ancestry for William
Girlington on his mother's side: the pedigrees in both the HSP (Visitation
of Yorkshire) and the Surtees Soc. (Visitations of the North) for the Borough
family (formerly de Richmond) show a daughter of William Borough,
' Lucia nupta Iohanni Katerick ', which agrees with Brown's article on the
Cattericks [4].
Based upon these connections, I have prepared an ahnentafel for William
Girlington, which obviously also applies to his elder brother Nicholas
Girlington of Hackforth. William's daughter Isabel (Girlington) Kelke is
well known as the ancestress of several 17th century emigrants to the
Americas (Asfordby, Farrar, etc.), as well as the Barons Farrer of Abinger
and many more besides. Anne Girlington, wife of Sir Christopher Wray, was
the daughter of Nicholas Girlington, son and heir of William Girlington:
a well known cast of Britons (emigrant and otherwise) descend from the
Wray-Girlington marriage. Among the (permanent or temporary) emigrants,
we find Sir Charles Augustus Fitzroy, the Governor of New South Wales
(d. 1858); among the non-emigrants, we find the less-than-venerated
Frederick North, Earl of Guilford (d. 1792), better known to most
(Americans anyway) as Lord North.
Should anyone of the list have additional documentation, comment or
criticism of the foregoing, that would be welcome. Any further details
concerning the Conyers, Borough (Richmond) or other ancestry of William
Girlington would likewise be most appreciated.
Cheers,
John *

petition dated 1425:
' SC 8/24/1191
Petitioners: William Fitz Hugh, knight
Addressees: Commons of parliament
Places mentioned: Everwyk (York); Yorkshire; Burghbridge
(Boroughbridge), [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Other people mentioned: Henry [Fitz Hugh], Lord Fitz Hugh, father
of petitioner; John [le Scrope of Masham], Lord Scrope; Henry
[le Scrope of Masham], Lord Scrope; John de Etton, knight; John
Bygod, knight; Christopher Conyers
Nature of request: William Fitz Hugh, knight complains of
irregularities in the inquisition taken on a writ of diem clausit
extremum after the death of his father, with the intention of
delaying and obstructing him from his heritage. He asks the
commons to ask the King and lords, to grant, by authority of
parliament, a commission to unbiased people, in the nature of
a diem clausit extremum, to enquire into his father's lands and
tenements. And because the Sheriff and Coroners of Yorkshire are
of the affinity of his adversaries, to send a warrant to an
unbiased person to empanel a jury, with various penalties to
compel them to give their verdict; so that if it is found that
his father held no lands and tenements of the King in chief by
knight service, or in some other way requiring wardship and
marriage, he might be able to have possession of them, saving
the rights of others.
Endorsement: [On face] Soit baille as seignurs (It is to be delivered
to the lords). (on front)[On dorse] A writ is to be issued to the
Escheator of Yorkshire, to return the writ of diem clausit extremum
addressed to him after the death of Sir Henry Fitz Hugh, knight,
with the inquisition taken on it, if there was one, on the Tuesday
following the feast of St Peter Ad Vincula next, on pain of a
penalty of £100. And if no such inquisition is returned on the
said Tuesday, then the Chancellor is to have power, by authority
of parliament, to give a commission to John de Etton, knight, John
Bygod, knight and Christopher Conyers, or to any others at his
discretion, in the nature of a diem clausit extremum, as is
desired by the petition.'[13]
