Lancashire 1086

According to Hylton's "History of Manchester" 1086,
the population of this basically church community was
small compared to neighboring Salford which was the
main administrative town at that time.

Manchester's population with a parish area of about 60
square miles would have been perhaps 1000 to 2000.

At that time Salford the chief town and hundred
covered an area of 350 square miles, and possessed a
population of about 3000. Thus the average number of
individuals per square mile was under 9!

It is thought provoking to realise that the average
wapentake in Lancashire was about 5 square miles -
thus each wapentake only possessed about five families
(each family of nine individuals)

So few families of that period does suggest that
WilliamI and his men truly laid waste of the North.

Sincerely Yours,
