Ogilvy-Falconer

Leo van de Pas wrote a query in 2005 asking about Sibilla Ogilvy, first
wife of Sir John Falconer (c.1600-1670), Master of the Mint in
Scotland. I haven't seen Gary Boyd Roberts's book, but Pas finds her
there, and I presume Roberts got the information from my book on the
Falconers (Sibilla's son David, a Quaker merchant, was the father of
three permanent emigrants to Maryland).

Sibilla's death date, 4 December 1634, comes from her testament dative
in the Commissariot of Brechin, along with proof that her sole heir was
David. There are no clues to her family there, and I've searched the
calendars (there are *five* concurrent ones) for Scottish deeds for the
period 1625-1635 or so, looking for Ogilvy v. Falconer records, which
might illuminate the problem, but I didn't find any (when will these be
indexed??).

Memorials concerning David's half-brother Sir John's case for redress
(to the Duke of York and King) in the 1680s mention that David's
"mother's friends" at court were led by James Ogilvy, Earl of Airlie,
and other Ogilvies. I suspect that this means that Sibilla was more
closely related to the Airlie branch than other Ogilvy branches, but
probably not much more, since this political move (it refers to an
attempt in 1660 to make David co-Master of the Mint, apparently an
Ogilvy attempt to gain influence at court).

At the time of John's marriage (1630), the Falconers were on the way
up, politically and socially speaking, so a marriage to a close
relative of the Earl of Airlie would not be out of place. But until
and unless someone tries to trace all the Ogilvy cadet lines, beyond
what has already been published, it will be difficult to crack this
one.

What is badly needed is a modern index to the older series of Scottish
deeds, with full names and descriptions of the parties. Right now all
we have are the ancient minutes, which just give the names "Smith q
Douglas," etc.
