William Hill, Crich, derbyshire

I have a direct link back to William Hill (1510-1569) He was born in
Crich, Derbyshire, England.

The link to my mother, Patricia Hill is unbroken through all the
centuries. William seems to have been a farmer and miller, and I would
dearly like to find out more about him or even to delve back further.
Unfortunately the parish records are poor and I am something of a loss.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
Martin

More than likely that William held some land from the local manor and as
such would be a copyholder of the manor. Some record would have been
made on the court rolls of the manor. You can look up in Victoria
County History for Derbyshire (I don't know if the relevant hundred has
been covered yet) to see what manors were in the area. Then there is a
chance that some, but only a few, of the court rolls have survived and
may be in the county Record Office (or Archives or whatever they are
called these days).

Find if there are any records for the relevant manor(s) and, if so, search
them. The manorial documents register (MDR) should help you ascertain which
local manors existed, where they were situated, and what extant records are
known to TNA.

Consider wills if you have not done so. The most relevant courts seem to be
the Archdeaconry of Derby, the Prerogative Court of York and, of course,
P.C.C..

Ask again if in doubt.
