I have recently identified two earlier generations of the Bekering
family of Lincs, Notts and Derbyshire, and here post the extended
stemma in case it might be of interest to anyone. We also find that
one of the Bekerings added considerably to the historical bad press of
the Sheriffs of Nottingham...
1. Peter de Bekering, named as father of Thomas, 1233, and grandfather
of Thomas son of Thomas, 1220; possibly married to Agnes, whose plea of
dower resulted in an award of half a mark from Philip de Timberland, 9
December 1218 [Selden Soc. Pub, Vol 53: Pleas at Lincoln]. Issue:
2. Thomas de Bekering; apparently dead by 1218; married Eleanor de
Baiocis, named as mother of Thomas de Bekering in the legal action of
1220; living 1233, when she sued Simon de Bekering over her dower lands
in Beckering, Tirington and Holton, then described as "wife of
Thomas, son and heir of Peter de Bekering" [Curia Regis Rolls, Vol XV
#103, at Lincoln]; issue:
3a. Thomas de Bekering, as "Thomas son of Thomas de Bekering",
involved with legal action against Hugh de Neville and Adam Tisun in
relation to a tenement in Holton-by-Beckering, 1218-19 [Lincoln
Assizes, 25 November 1218 & 7 January 1219; Nottingham Assizes, 18
February & 17 March 1219, 'Rolls of the Justice in Eyre for
Lincolnshire 1218-1219', Selden Soc. Pub. Vol 53]; implicated in the
the death of William de Tillebroc, 1220-1 [Curia Regis Rolls, Vol VIII
pp 381-3; Vol IX; Vol X p 329]; presumably the one of this name,
"broken down with age", relieved from his duties as an assessor in
Lincolnshire, 7 February 1270 [Cal. Pat. Rolls]; died 1272 [VCH Hunts
Vol III sub Catworth]; married [probably by 1220] Mary de Cauz,
daughter and heir of James de Cauz by Alice, daughter of Walter Fitz
Gilbert; died 1279; I.P.M. by writ dated 8 September 7 Edward I [1279]
(Cal. IPMs Vol 2 #313) "lands at Catteworth, Hunts; she died Thursday
after the Decollation of St John the Baptist; Sir Thomas Bekering her
son aged 30 (sic) is her next heir; in Nottinghamshire: Bolum,
Lytledon, Bradeford, Middleton, the manor of Hernham; heir: as above,
aged 40 (sic)". Issue:
4a. Sir Thomas de Bekering, apparently born between 1238 and 1249; heir
to his mother, 1279; IPM 3 December 16 Edward I [1287] (Cal. IPMs Vol 2
#679) "Huntingdonshire: Quetwell, Stoew, Estoew, Little Catheworth, and
the advowson of Catherworth; Northumberland: East Hertwailon,
Thorneburg, one half advowson by turn of Bolum" [no details given as to
heir]; married Cecily Markham, daughter and coheir of Robert Markham;
born circa 1259; coheiress of Tuxford and Laxton; had a licence to
remarry, 6 November 1286 [Cal. Pat. Rolls]; she married secondly circa
1287 John de Bray, and was living in 1318 when she had a licence to
grant land held in chief at Tuxford of the value of £40 to her son
Thomas [Cal. Pat. Rolls, 25 September 1318]. Issue:
5a. Leonard de Bekering, custody of the manor of Catworth granted to
Master Henry Wade, King's Serjeant, during his nonage, 27 June 1285
[Cal. Pat. Rolls]; his marriage granted to Hugh de Turberville, 16 July
1285 [Cal. Pat. Rolls]; died circa 1288; married Lettice. No issue.
5b. Thomas de Bekering, born circa 1276, as per Proof of Age:
"Proof of age of Thomas son and heir of Thomas de Bekering, at
Westminster, 25 Edward I. He was born at Bekering and baptised in the
church there; he was born on the feast of St Thomas the Apostle next
following St Michael's feast 21 years ago. [The wife of Nicholas de
Haulay of Houton-by-Bekering was his nurse] and suckled him" [Cal.
IPMs Vol 3 #435; Coram Rege Roll, 25 Ed I rot 30];
the manors of Herneham and Middleton granted to Walter de Huntercombe
during his nonage [Cal. Pat. Rolls, 6 February 1290]; named in the Plea
Roll entry of 1339; served as a Justice, 1319 [PRO Sc 8/126/6287]; had
licence at the instance of Robert de Umfraville, Earl of Angus, to
grant lands to the value of £40 in his manor of Bolom, Northumberland,
held in chief, to Thomas his eldest son and the heirs of his body
(subsequently surrendered and vacated) [Cal. Pat. Rolls, 20 May 1318];
granted a life estate over a messuage and 27 acres at Tuxford, Notts,
17 Edward II (1323/4) [PRO C 143/164/4]; sought the forfeiture of
Belsay and Thornbrough "which John de Middleton held from him" in
compensation for his lands in Northumberland "which had been burnt
and destroyed, and his people killed and driven out" [PRO
8/97/4802B]; died 1326. Issue:
6a. Sir Thomas de Bekering, had a licence to grant the advowson of
Bolum to William de Herle, 21 September 1334 [Cal. Pat. Rolls]; subject
of Plea Roll entry, 1339; called "chivaler" [Cal. Pat. Rolls, 26
May 1347]; escheator of Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire, 1346 [PRO E

office:

Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire that Thomas de Bekering, late the
sheriff of those counties, and his ministers and servants, by colour of
those offices have been guilty of divers oppressions against the King
and the complainants, have taken grievous fines and ransoms without
just cause, and have committed other trespasses and evils not to be
tolerated" [Cal. Pat. Rolls]
"Whereas Thomas de Bekering, knight, late sheriff and escheator of
the counties of Nottingham and Derby was indicted of oppressions, false
returns of writs, false measures, victuals concealed and taken from the
commonalty of the city of Nottingham above measure for his own use,
false imprisonments and ransoms extorted thereby, by colour of his
office aforesaid, as also of the time when he was assigned to buy
victuals for the King, and was afterwards convicted thereof by the
inquisitions, upon which he put himself before William de Thorpe and
his fellows, justices assigned to hear and determine the premises, and
whereas he thereupon submitted himself to the King's grace before the
justices and was assessed by them at a fine of £200 as the King has
heard; at the instance of Henry, Earl of Lancaster, and for a fine of
£100 to be paid into the chamber, the King has pardoned him all that
pertains to him for oppressions in the county of Nottingham whereof the
said Thomas has been so convicted, as well as for any in the county of
Derby whereof he has not yet been convicted, and of any subsequent
outlawry", 26 May 1347 [Cal. Pat. Rolls, Edward III Vol 7, p 535]
"writ issued by the King to the Exchequer informing them that he has

£100 be paid into the King's Chamber by Bekering, his wife Isabel,
John de Ticley, clerk, and Simon de Rous of Somerby, chaplain, for all

distrained for the 400 marks, and that he be arrested and placed in the
Fleet prison where he is now detained; he requests that notwithstanding
the payment default the King order that he enjoy the benefit of the

foot and touching of a false bushel of short measure and thrusting her
hands into the said false bushel while wheat, peas, oats and other corn
were falling into it to be measured, and of other deceits by colour of
her office in the same time, and was convicted as above, and whereas
she and her husband were assessed for this by the justices at a fine of
