Dame Mary Temple, formerly Penistone, nee Sommer

At the weekend, I visited Leeds Castle in Kent, where I saw a copy of a
portrait of Mary Penistone and her son Thomas (later Sir Thomas). This
was attributed to Robert Peake. Mary later married Sir Alexander
Temple. Unfortunately, I have not been able to learn anything about the
provenance of this portrait from the heritage manager at Leeds Castle
and the National Portrait Gallery also has no information.

Can anyone suggest how I can research the provenance of this portrait?

My immediate thought is - how did you approach the heritage manager?

It may be that you got an, um, not fully considered answer. A formal letter
to the archivist or librarian at the castle may get a more detailed
investigation.

Another line of approach may be to check other collections holding Robert
Peake (a quick google threw up the Norfolk Castle Museum, Metropolitan
Museum of Art, The Tate, Berger Collection, etc.) or to look up any
articles/books/studies on the artist. Also: links at:

It may help if you specify in any enquiry more fully what you are hoping to
find. An interest in the artist might elicit a different research response
than if you indicate you have a specific genealogical interest.

Thanks for these helpful suggestions. I'll post again if anything turns
up.

My impression is that both the Heritage Manager at Leeds and the
National Portrait Gallery were being as helpful as they could be - they
simply did not have any information.
