The Comyns after the Murder of Red John in 1306

Dear John Douglas and others,
I yhave run across two
different versions of the ancestry of Sir Richard Comyn of Altyre, who was
acknowledged as Chief of Clan Comyn in about 1368 -and died in 1407. He was given the
office of Chief Forrester to the King and was sent as Ambassador to England one
at least one occasion. He was granted (or allowed to keep?) the lands of
Altyre, Forres, Moray and interestingly the family had retained lands taken during
the minority of Angus MackIntosh, 6th of that Ilk who married Eva, daughter of
Dougall , Captain of Clan Chattan in 1291 within Badenoch, which They had
been occupying with the Camerons since before Walter Comyn had been granted the
title of Lord of Badenoch. The Macintosh chief became Seneschal of Badenoch.
Richard Comyn married Agnes , daughter of John de Grant and had two son,
Ferquhard Comyn, 2nd of Altyre married Janet, daughter of John Cameron of Lochiel
and Duncan Comyn who married a daughter of William Mackintosh, 7th of that Ilk.
Richard was the son of Thomas Comyn who died in about 1365 by Helen
Arbuthnott, Thomas is variously given as the son of Robert Comyn died 1306 or the son
of Angus Comyn and Marian, grandson of Robert Comyn and Beatrix and Great
grandson of Robert Comyn d 1306 by Egidia. The Robert Comyn b say 1272?-died 1306
was the younger son of John the Red Comyn I d 1277 by his 2nd wife Alice de
Roos (married ca. 1269) being the grandfather of Richard seems a bit long, the
great great grandfather a bit short. What if Robert married 1st Egidia in abt
1293 and had John abt 1294, Robert abt 1296, then married Beatrix and had
Angus abt 1299, Gilbert abt 1302 and Donald abt 1304?
Stirnet used Robert d 1306 married Cumin of Lochaber and had Thomas married
Helen Arbuthnott. As Lochaber was part of the Badenoch grant, this is
impossible.
Donald Comyn is perhaps the same as the grandson of Comyn of Badenoch said on
some Davidson websites to have married Slani MacIntosh, daughter of the 6th
chief of MacIntosh and had a son David, ancestor of the Davidson family.
A half dozen or so Ancestry World Tree databases give the Robert / Robert /
Angus/ Thomas / Richard pedigree
Sincerely,
James W Cummings

This is interesting to me. It is claimed that the wife of
Hugh Rose, 8th of Kilravock, one of my ancestors, had as
wife one Margaret Gordon, whose mother was supposed to be
a Comyn of Altyre, and whose father was the 1st earl of
Huntly. Margaret would have been born very very roughly
1464, as she married in 1484.

I'd like to know more on this line.
