Hello John, Jeff, Nat, et al.,

This is a note to advise those interested researchers of
entries in the Calendar of Close Rolls which bear on the
Everinghams of Laxton, and may also have some bearing on the
ancestry of Digby of Digby (previously Tilton).

In a prior thread, the identity of Clarice [first wife of Sir
Adam de Everingham (d. 1341)] was discussed, primarily having to
do with the conjecture that she was a daughter of Sir Roger la
Warre (d. 1320) and his wife Clarice de Tregoz [1]. The last
'evidence' noted was from the Knights of Edward I (HSP 80:319),
where the entry for Sir Adam de Everingham included the
interesting note, "He owes 400 m. in Lincs., Yorks. and Notts.,
to his d. Sibyl, 2 Jy. 1320 (C.R.). "

The actual 1320 entry in the Close Rolls has not been found,
but I did locate entries from 1327 [see below, note [2]], which
reflect that Sibyl had by then married one Robert de Diggeby
(presumably later rendered Digby). These entries record the
results of negotiations in May 1327 towards satisfaction of the
1320 recognisance by Sir Adam to Sibyl.

I regret that beyond the above, I have not found proof of a
descent from Everingham of Laxton to the Digbys. It does appear
that this Robert de Digby had acquired lands in Lincolnshire,
either directly related to marriage to Sibyl de Everingham or
otherwise, based on further evidence in the Close Rolls [4].

With some additional luck (or the findings of others),
perhaps this will extend the ancestry of the Digbys a bit. There
are numerous interesting Anglo-Saxon and other lines (descents
from Ethelred II, Charlemagne, etc.) which could then be added
the ancestry of that family.

Cheers,

John *
