Dear John, Michael, et al.,

Among the dispensation texts given in Testamenta
Eboracensia, the following (dated 7 Jan 1407/08) was
particularly interesting:

' Dispensation for Robert, son of Sir Richard Tempest,
domicellus, and Alice, dau. of John Lacy, domicella, in
the diocese of York, to marry, although twice related in
the 4th degree. Ibid. 11. ' [1]

The intended husband was Robert (later Sir Robert) Tempest
of Staynforth; the family of Alice Lacy is not readily apparent,
but it appears most likely she was a daughter of John Lacy of
Cromwellbotham, co. Yorks. The Lacys of Cromwellbotham held
lands near Clitheroe, as did the Talbots of Bashall, who were
ancestral to Sir Robert Tempest. The following consecutive
entries were noted in the extent of lands given in the IPM of
Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln, in February 1310/11 :

' The heir of Sir Edmund Talbot held one ploughland in
Hapton by the service of the 8th part of a knight's fee,
and renders 13d. yearly at Midsummer and doe suit at the
court of Clidrehowe from three weeks to three weeks.
Henry de Lacy of Crumbewelle [-bothum] held the hamlet
of Brydestwysel [Birtwistle], namely half a ploughland by
homage and the service of 4s. yearly at the same term, and
by doing suit at the aforesaid court. ' [2]

The heir of Sir Edmund Talbot was his young son John, and
like Henry de Lacy was a sibling of an ancestor of the dispensed
pair, as shown in the following chart (names of above mentioned
individuals are capitalized):

Sir Edmund = Joan de John de Lacy = Margaret

There are numerous gaps in the ancestry of both individuals.
There was a probable relationship between Sir Richard Tempest
and Mary Talbot, as pointed out recently by John Schuerman, but
this is too distant to have caused consanguinity between Alice
Lacy and Sir Robert Tempest sufficient to have required a
dispensation. However, there are numerous holdings of both
families in Yorkshire and Lancashire, further research into
which may yield one or both of the relationships stated in the
dispensation. I will post those details I have found to date,
towards possibly locating the key(s), and welcome any
additional documentation, insight or criticism.

Cheers,

John
