Dix Preston:

Thank you for your detailed information. It has
clarified some of my data.

Your advise of a Thomas (son) Waltheof Dunbar is of
some interest. I have yet to find any evidence of this
Thomas. I have only information of Waltheof's children
Gunnilda and Alan.

Secondly I am puzzled that this Thomas is then claimed
to have held the manor of Worthington, had a grant of
Curwen Galloway etc etc. This information appears to
contradict your later information of the Kendall
family, and does not appear to tally with the
following:

Lancashire P/R Farrer states that Ketel (son) Eldred
held Workington, Keeton, and Salter 1075-1110. Orm
(son) Ketel inherited his father's estates of
Workington, Preston Patrick etc, and was father of
Gospatric.

Waltheof Dunbar brother in law of Orm, and brother of
Gunilda Orm's wife, infeoffed Orm of manor of Seton
below Derwent - part of the Barony of Allerdale.

Gospatric (son) Orm 1110-1179 held his father's
estates, Lord of Workington and included lands of
Copeland and Westmoreland of the Lancasters (Gilbert
Lancaster being brother of Orm), and several manors
within Barony of Egremont

Alan Dunbar (son) Waltheof 2nd Earl of Allerdale
cousin german to Gospatric (son) Orm gave Gospatric
High Ireby.

The text Lordship of Galloway p99 mentions the
Gospatric family of Workington.

Lanc P/R Charter 1163 Confirmation Henry II re
agreement between monks of Furness and William
Lancaster has Gospatric as a witness (think it
mentioned that he was Lord of Workington)

So it seems rather difficult to imagine that this
Thomas (son) Waltheof Dunbar being lord of Workington.

Finally Gunilda (daughter) of Waltheof was born at
Allerdale, and married Uctred of Galloway (Barons of
Galloway p67). That is presumably the Galloway
connection.

Regarding the children of Gospatric (son) Orm, I have
records of Thomas, Gilbert, Adam, and Orm, but nothing
of Alexander.

By the way Gospatric of Samlesbury was one generation
ahead of Gospatric (son) Orm. Whether or not there is
any connection is of interest.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley

I am not very happy about these dates. What is the source? It seems
to me that Gospatric was quite a bit later.

Some of you who are interested in extending medieval genealogy into modern
problem-solving may be interested in:

It is worth downloading the Workington Hall Conservation Plan and the
Gazetteer. The former this has a potted history of the Curwens. The latter
has detailed descriptions and pictures of the architectural and historical
features of the Hall.
