Oseville- William FitzSwale

In times past the village of West Woodhay was
known as Woodhay Oseville, named after the Lords
who held the manor until about 1250. Near the
present church, but half a mile from the old
one, stands the motte of a small castle or
hunting lodge. It was probably built by the
Oseville ancestor, William FitzSwale, in the
early twelfth century. He was the son of
Swalo, the man given the manor after the
Norman Conquest. The St. Amands later lived
there, but they probably abandoned the castle,
about 1300,

Found this on a Berkshire site about Woodhay Castle as well as an
earlier message to the group.
Of interest is the line above," Probably built by the OSEVILLE
ancestor, William FITZSWALE etc--- ;"the son of Swalo, the man given
the manor after the Norman Conquest.

Is Swalo the same as Sewal/ Seswal"as holding Ilsley, Berks., from
Geoffrey de MANDEVILLE? Seswal was ancestor of the OSEVILL family." [ a
footnote found on pp. 46-7 of "Historia Ecclesia Abbendonensis: The
Hist. of the Church of Abingdon, Vol. II.]

Have found that Seswal had a son Walter de OSEVILL. Does anyone have
material on William FitzSwale and his connection to the OSEVILLES?

Has anyone found a connection to the St Amands mentioned above?

Thank you
