Hello All,

In his work on the Butlers of Skelbrook and Kirk Sandal, W. P.
Baildon noted a fine dated 1269 between Robert le Butiler junior and
Agnes his wife, plaintiffs, and Robert le Butiler senior and
Constance his wife, deforciants, of 12 bovates of land in
Spaldington. In connection with the details in this fine, Baildon
noted, the following concerning Constance, wife of Robert le
Botiller (or le Butiler) the elder:

' His wife's name was Constance; she had land in
Spaldington [near Howden, East Riding] in her own right.
They had issue Robert. ' [1]

Constance was evidently of the family de la Haye, and most
likely a close relation of Sir Peter de la Hay of Spaldington
(d. after 15 May 1254). She appears again in 1302-03, holding
4 bovates in Spaldington of the Mowbray fee:

' De feodo de Moubrai iiij car. terrae vij bov. di.
Osbertus de Spaldington tenet j car ij bov. di.,
Custancia de la Haie iiij bov., Philippus de la Haie
di. car., Petrus de la Haie residuum, - unde xviij
car. terrae faciunt feod. ' [2]

What was done (presumably by her son Robert) with the
remaining 8 bovates in Spaldington is unclear. It is possible
that the 1/2 carucate held by Philip de la Haye was held in
1302-03 of Robert le Botiller and his wife Agnes, but this
is far from certain.

That Constance (de la Haye) le Botiller was alive in 1302-03
was noted by Baildon, but given the number of Roberts (le
Botiller) living during this time he mistakenly identified her
as most likely the wife of the young Robert le Botiller who was
executed in 1294 [3]. She then held dower in Skelbroke of the
inheritance of her grandson Edmund le Botiller, and had
evidently demised same to her daughter in law Agnes (widow of
her son Robert) and her 2nd husband, William de Wakefeld.
