Papworth (1874)
Does anyone know if this source is available online or on CD?
John W. Papworth. 1874. "An Ordinary of British Armorials." London.
I suspect not because I've been searching and can't find it, but in case I've
over looked it...

RE: Papworth (1874)
Thank you JP. Someone privately emailed me that it's online at GoogleBooks, so
I found it there for free in PDF format. But you get what you pay for. Some of
the pages are cropped and some are missing (including one I wanted), and because
the pages are graphic images, Adobe reader can't search them. This was actually
my first encounter with GoogleBooks (http://books.google.com/), and it's pretty
astounding what they're attempting to do.
In looking at the description of the CD you mentioned, it has enough on it, in
addition to Papworth, to make it an attractive purchase. Are you able to search
the CD for words in the books?

Papworth is not word searchable, it is bookmarked. Most, if not all, of
the items on this CD are not word searchable. But that is OK with me.
It is identical to the published book in this respect that you have to
page through it.
I have been pleasantly surprised to find some rare treasure on
GoogleBooks, but for serious reference works, I would prefer purchasing
a CD with quality images.

Most material on books.google is there because of copyright expired.
Something I do is to use google books for the search, and then I go
to the BNF gallica site and I download the book with a better
quality. And it is quite fascinating the many useful books you may
find in both sites. For example, I found a list of bishops of
France since the beginnings of each diocese, something I searched
previously without success (the uncle of a Quebec immigrant was a
bishop but I can't find any source to identify him).

RE: Papworth (1874)
The only reason I hesitate to purchase the CD is that I already have Burke on
CD, so I'll be paying for it again. It's going to come down to how badly I want
that one missing page.

I shouldn't be so chintzy. The CD doesn't have to save me much time to be worth
the cost. I may be retired, but my time is still worth *something*.
