Name change from Gloucester to Hereford

Dear Newsgroup ~

Last year I posted a message which discussed historian David Walker's
statement that family of the early Earls of Hereford used the style "of
Gloucester" until Miles of Gloucester was created first earl of
Hereford in 1141; thereafter this family adopted the style "of
Hereford." [Reference: David Walker, ed., "Charters of the Earldom of
Hereford, 1095-1201 in Camden Miscellany 22 (Camden Soc. 4th Ser. 1)
(1964): 1, footnote 2]. Mr. Walker included charters in his article
which showed that Earl Miles' sons, Walter, Henry, and Mahel, all used
the style "of Hereford" {Reference: Walker, ibid., 42-51]. Elsewhere I
found similar instances of Earl Miles' daughter, Lucy (wife of Herbert
Fitz Herbert), using the style "of Hereford" in her own charters,
several of which are printed in J. S. Brewer, ed., Registrum
Malmesburiense (or The Register of Malmesbury Abbey) 2 (Rolls Ser. 72)
(London, 1880): 11-12, 57-58, 65-67; see also Walker, ibid., 74-75.

Interestingly, there is yet another charter of Miles, Earl of Hereford,
found online at the following weblink:

I've copied the Latin transcript of Earl Miles' charter below, along
with the accompanying English translation. This charter shows that as
late as 1141-1143, Earl Miles' son, Roger, was still using the style
"of Gloucester." Thus, the name change from Gloucester to Hereford
appears to have taken place some time after the date of the charter
below.

Charter of Miles, 1st Earl of Hereford

Folio 65v. 249, 1141-3.

Carta Milonis comitis Hereford' de ii hidis terre.

Omnibus etc. Milo comes Hereford salutem. Sciatis me dedisse pro anime
Harecort. Testibus, Rogero de Gloc' filio meo Waltero filio Ricardi.

To all etc. Miles, Earl of Hereford gives greetings. Know you that I
have given for the soul of king Henry and Walter my father and Bertha
my mother and my other predecessors and for the salvation of my body
and soul and those of other friends to the Temple of Jerusalem and to
the knights serving in the same place, two hides of land that I held in
chief of king Henry in Lockeridge, as free and quit of all secular
service and exaction as I held them in my demesne with the manor which
belonged to Richard of St.Quinton, my knight who conceded this and to
whom I gave an exchange for that same land according to his wish. But
the tithe of the same land is paid each year to the church of the Holy
Mary at Gloucester and to the canons of Lanthony living according to
the rule in that same place, just as in the dedication of this church,
by my donation and special authority to them confirmed, he will be
under anathema anyone who shall do injury to them thereafter. This
gift I made more gladly out of recognition and love for Richard de
Harecourt. Witnesses, Roger of Gloucester my son and Walter, son of
Richard.
