Parents of Thomas Rotherham, Archbishop of York +1500

It is often stated (e.g. ODNB) that the name of Thomas Rotherham's
father is unknown, and that there is no contemporary foundation for the
suggestion that he was a Sir John Rotherham. His mother is known to
have been Dame Alice Rotherham (she is named in connection with the
Guild that the family established at Luton), and he had one brother,
John (d 1492, of Someries, Luton) and a sister (wife of William Blythe
of Norton, Derbyshire).

I note that the Eton College Registers 1441-1698, edited by Sir Wasey
Sterry, show the following entry for the future Archbishop:

"Thomas Rotherham als Scott, c1443; son of Sir Thomas Rotherham of
Rotherham; born Rotherham 24 August 1423*; King's Scholar, King's
College, Cambridge, July 1443; Chancellor of Cambridge University,
1469-71; Master of Pembroke"

His brother's entry reads:

"John Rotherham, doubtless second son of Sir Thomas Rotherham, born at
Rotherham; King's Scholar, King's College, Cambridge, 14 September
1448; one of the posthumous miracles of Henry VI was the cure of his
lunatic servant"

I wonder if there is any evidence for this putative identification of
their father as Sir Thomas Rotherham?

The family appears to be:

1. Sir [?Thomas] Rotherham, of Rotherham; married Alice. Issue:

2a. Thomas Rotherham, born 24 August 1423; educated at Eton and King's
College, Cambridge; Archbishop of York; died 29 May 1500; will proved
York.

2b. (daughter), married William Blythe of Norton, Derbyshire. Issue:

3a. John Blythe, Bishop of Salisbury, died 23 August 1499

3b. Geoffrey Blythe, Bishop of Lichfield & Coventry, died 1530

[3c. (daughter), married to Richard Restwold - the Archbishop refers
thus in his will to his sister's daughter, who should presumably be
placed here; issue:]

[4a. Anne Restwold, married Humphrey Roos - named in the Archbishop's
will]

2c. John Rotherham, educated at Eton & King's College, Cambridge; of
Someries, Luton; MP for Canterbury, 1472-5, and for Bedfordshire, 1478;
JP from 1472; High Sheriff of Beds & Bucks, 1476-7 & 1488-9; died 1492;
will proved PCC; married Alice, daughter of John Wynter, MP, and widow
successively of William Dennington and Thomas Foster. Issue:

3a. Sir Thomas Rotherham, of Someries, died 1504; married Catherine,
daughter of Anthony, Lord Grey of Ruthyn; left issue

3b. George Rotherham, designed to married the daughter of - Lovell,
according to the Archbishop's will; left natural issue, a son.

3c. Alice Rotherham, married Thomas St George of Hatley St George; left
issue.

[*a fact deduced from a reference in his will - which would seem to
make a circa 1443 date for Eton rather strange - MAR]

I can't seem to find an Anthony Lord Grey of Ruthyn. I have seen her called a daughter of Sir John Grey, 8th Baron Grey of Wilton but I can't find the ref. at the moment.

Harvey et al. Visitation of Beds, 1566 etc., pps 49-50 has purported
pedigree of this family with Sir John Scott as father of Thomas Scott
alias Rotheram, Arch. of York with a brother Sir William Scott (Sheriff
of Kent) and a brother Sir John Rotheram (married to Alice Beckett).

I have no idea of the accuracy of this pedigree

It is not terribly accurate: John Rotherham, the brother, was not it
seems a Knight, and his wife was not a Beckett, either by birth or by
her earlier marriages. The assignation of a brother Sir William Scott
(sic) is also highly questionable.

I do note that, according to ODNB, there was a third brother - Roger
Rotherham, died 1477, who was also a cleric.

The source which calls Catherine the daughter of Anthony, Lord Grey of
Ruthyn, is Test. Ebor. IV in a footnote to the Archbishop's will. I
typed it into the stemma without evaluating it - having done so I agree
that her placement within the Grey family is problematic, and in fact I
gave up trying to do so last time I looked at the problem.
