Is it true that the name ROMA is short for ORSINI DI ROMA ?.

If yes, when and why did the name change/simplified?

The name ROMA occurs mainly in the islands of Corfu, Zante, etc, and starts
from the early 17th century.

Orsini di Roma means Orsini of Rome. You could also have, for example,
Massimo di Roma, or Giuseppe di Roma. In other words, di Roma pertains
to someone from Rome. There may have been many people, from different
genealogical strains, who went from Roma (Rome) to Corfu or Xante in the
early 17th century.

Yes, I understand that.
However, The name ROMA I am told, derives from ORSINI de ROMA.
I posted the message after I found this ALSO in the Italian website
http://www.sardimpex.com/
I also like to point out that the members of the ROMA family I have are all
related.
I would like to know for sure.

regards

George

The website that you mentioned comments that:

Giovanni de ROMA, originario di Roma, i discendenti pretendevano fosse un
membro della famiglia Orsini

This suggests to me that the name wasn't shortened from Orsini di
Roma, but was an elaboration assumed at a later stage.
