With the recent reference to royal bastards, it strikes me now might be
a good time to make an announcement.

As a numnber of you know, in 1950 at a gathering of the Fellows of the
American Society of Genealogists, it was decided by various eminent
genealogists - among them Donald Lines Jacobus, John Coddington, George
Andrews Moriarty - to found an hereditary society requiring and
exemplifying the highest and most stringent standards of genealogical
proof. This was done largely in response to the FASG's correct
assessment of the then (shall we say) less than satisfactory standards
of proof observable in a number of hereditary societies. So, they
founded Descendants of the Illegitimate Sons and Daughters of the Kings
of Britain - "The Royal bastards" - to foster the noble aim of
encouraging the highest quality of genealogical research based on the
highest quality of evidence.

For more information on Descendants of the Illegitimate Sons and
Daughters of the Kings of Britain society, see the article by Eugene A.
Stratton, FASG, "A Look at the Royal, er, ahem … Bounders?" in the
Sept/Oct 1987 issue of The Ancestry Newsletter.

The charter and early members of the society number many worthy, indeed
famous, genealogists: among them, Sir Anthony Wagner, later Garter King
of Arms.

After a long hiatus/dormancy (due to my own woefully negligent
performance as Secretary-Treasurer), a new slate of officers for the
Descendants of the Illegitimate Sons and Daughters of the Kings of
Britain - "the Royal Bastards" or "RBs" - has been chosen. I am very
grateful to Jim Terzian for taking on the all important position of
Secretary-Treasurer.

As in the past reference to this till now nearly dormant society has
been made in this forum, I wanted to let you know that we look forward
to the Society's new lease on life. As soon as Jim is fully set up with
mailing address, etc., I will be glad to provide interested parties with
further detail.

New slate:

I wonder, does William the Bastard come under the heading of Royal
Bastards? If so that makes the potential membership rather large - and
relatively easy to prove.

While William was a bastard and was Royalty he was not, unless Ruling
Dukes were considered Royalty rather than Nobility at the time of his
birth, a Royal Bastard- but rather a Noble one. <G>

Of course William was a Royal Bastard, and as has previously been
discussed on this group a very significant proportion of those people
with western European ancestors will potentially qualify for
membership. Three of the four four people who live in my house will
qualify for membership, with multiple descents from William Longespee;
Richard FitzRoy; Henry FitzHenry; Robert de Caen and so on, as well as
William the Bastard himself. This is the key to an ancestral society
such as this, to make it sound exclusive while ensuring as large a
qualifying group as possible. This is easily achieved if only a single
ancestor of a specified type is required. My sister-in-law may support
her application for US citizenship by joining the Society of Colonial
Dames on the strength of a brief stay in Virginia in the 1630s and
1640s by one of her Yorkshire ancestors.

Much more demanding and exclusive are societies which require all
ancestors to be of a specified type, such as that I am contemplating
forming for myself "The Society of Descendants of Labourers, Manual
Craftsmen and their Conjugal Partners". ( I was going to call it "The
Society of Descendants of Labourers, Manual Craftsmen and their Wives"
but the legal formalities were not always observed.) After more than
two decades of research I have found no ancestors more elevated than
stone masons, carpenters or house painters - but I live in constant
fear that the next ancestor discovered will be a yeoman, merchant, or
worst of all, a 'Gent'.

Fred.
