Can anyone get further back with these families please?
I researching a family called Rowe which was based in Lamerton in
Devon. I've discovered a line that leads back to Sir Everard de Rowe
from near Romsey in Kent who was supposedly knighted by King Richard I.
The Rowes married into the Fitz family of Fitzford near Tavistock
several times.
Some of the branches of the Fitz family married into the Courtenay,
Percy and Darcy families so there are long genealogies tantalisingly
close but I haven't found a link to them on the branch I'm looking at.
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the de Rowes or the Fitz
families please? They sound as if they are of Norman descent. Both
families were landowners in Devon. I've spotted one theory that de Rowe
was originally de Roure.
Thank you
Sue

I know of a family called Tonkin from near Tavistock around 1800s. It
is common for this family to use a middle name of Rowe. e.g. Thomas Rowe
Tonkin.

Romsey isn't in Kent; it's in Hampshire. Do you mean Romney?
It might help if you were able to state your sources.

One source is the 1620 Visitation of Devon, p. 243 in the Harleian Soc

'Agnes, d. & coh. of Rob. Fytz of Tavistock'; I would guess that
marriage was around 1570 from a son's age of 48 in 1620.

Re: Rowe and de Rowe of Devon plus Fitz
Sorry it was late when I posted the first message and I got my Romney
and Romsey mixed up! The internet source I found stated Sir Everard de
Rowe was of Romney in Kent.
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/me ... e/rowe.txt
The Rowes connect to my husband's family and I was attempting to find
him a medieval link. He used to have a larger and more interesting tree
than me until I found my de Fiennes so I thought I'd do more on his
lot.
We know for certain via old family records and research done in
original parish records that his ancestor William Gill of Lamerton near
Tavistock married Thomasine Rowe who we already knew was born around
1754 and was the daughter of a John Rowe. Several of his family still
live around there and still own land in Lamerton.
I was googling and found the above link which has William Gill and
Thomasine Rowe on the list. It looks as if someone has done a lot of
research and it can't be simply from the IGI which is poor for
Tavistock and Lamerton.
The Gills were from a wealthy family which has been in the Tavistock
area for generations. The other families which they intermarry (the
Rowes and the Fitzs) appear in the Visitations of Devon and I've
compared what I could find there with everything else I had time to
find using Google plus our existing family trees.
Thomasine Rowe appears to be the granddaughter of the Poet Laureate
Nicholas Rowe.
If the research I found is accurate (and I would have liked to have
seen sources quoted) then there appears to be a line back to the Sir
Everard de Rowe.
I have hunted on Leo's great site plus others I have used recently with
good sources but not seen these Rowes mentioned. Frustratingly I've
seen my husband's distant cousins marrying into the Edgecombes, the
Darcys and the Percys. I've not seen a link to one of the noble
families via the branch I am interested in and the line back to Sir
Everard is all I have at the moment.
So my initial post was just a hope that someone somewhere might have
come across something I've missed.
Best wishes
Sue
