A few days ago I was recommending this site to someone. I had told them
that the information on here has been a tremendous help to me and that
for anyone lucky enough to find a medieval link then this is THE place
to look for answers. I am now afraid that someone new will come in here
and be totally put off by the recent messages.
I receive my messages from here as a regular digest......I'm not sure
if that is how everyone gets them but my e-mails over the past couple
of days have been full of repeated insults and disgraceful slanders and
accusations in the postings from this group. It wouldn't be quite so
bad if we didn't seem to get many of the earlier posts duplicated each
time.
To be quite honest I don't care about who likes whom on here or who has
been on here the longest. I thought we were supposed to be discussing
medieval genealogy. The grizzly bear joke was a welcome relief after
all the nastiness!
A debate on some relevant issue done in an adult manner is one thing
but this whole stupid squabble has gone beyond sense. I suggest that
those of you with your own personal axes to grind remember that your
messages are being spread all over the Internet and saved to archives.
These unpleasantries are reflecting badly on a number of members of
this group.

The reason why I have seen none of these messages is that I have had in
my programs various filters for a long time to exclude certain people.
It sounds as if it must be the same old people as I have seen nothing of
the problem you report.
So I would recommend that you put in filters or kill-files as they are
called in some programs.
Your problem may be in your use of Google Groups and this may not have
the required facilities as it does not run separate filters or
kill-files for each user. To allow you to use software that has these
facilities, you must link directly to the list or the newsgroup (Google
does not link you directly, it first of all collects the messages
probably from the newsgroup).
Probably the easiest thing for you to do is to sign on to Rootsweb by
sending an e-mail to:
MEDIEVAL-L-request@rootsweb.com
and then set up the filters and kill-files in your e-mail software as
the rubbish comes in.
You can also handle this by using some newsgroup software for the
soc.genealogy.medieval newsgroup but you may find this a little more
complicated.

Ah, Sue, having lurked here for many years, your concern is admirable
but wasted. They will go on until they all drop with exhaustion.
Delete the messages from the subject line and let them have at it.

Dear Tim et al
Thankyou for reminding me to kill-file a certain obnoxious person who seems
to have returned to this list after a blessed absence.
I have now found out how to do it, and await the bliss of no more ranting
from the silly old pogue.

What site? You are writing to a usenet newsgroup, not a site.
If, as I guess, you are talking about soc.genealogy.medieval then you
are 100% correct. There are some of the most helpful and knowlegable
people you will ever find here.
No, it is not. The majority will use a proper newsreader and access
the group as it is supposed to be accessed. Any other method produces
inferior results, and a digest form is just about the worst way of
doing it. One of the big advantages of useing a proper newsreader is
that you only read those messages you want to.
I don't understand. What do you mean by duplicated?
There have been a number of important factors debated, particularly
the erroneous claim that living people somehow own the public facts
like their date of birth/marriage and should somehow have a right to
censor other people's use of that data. As genealogy is as much about
going forward/sideways as well as back, and as this is a genealogy
newsgroup, it is only right such things are debated here.
If you need help in setting up to read newsgroups properly you only
have to ask. (My email is a real one but you will need to verify
yourself with the spam trap service I use.)

this is an issue of privacy protection especially to prevent stolen
identities NOT ownership of the records
