I got no reply when I posted this query to PADUTCHgenONLY-L, so I hoping someone
here is familiar with the term...

I have someone from the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylania who is said to be of "Than"
origin. What
is "Than"?

I could make some guesses, but it would help if you would provide more
information. In what context did this appear - family tradition, Bible,
church book, naturalization, etc? What time period? Is it a
German-language document or an English- one? Which script is used?
What is the name of the individual?

This is the quote:

"DAVID H. STRAUB, who is now living retired in Lehighton, but who for many years
was industriously and successfully identified with agricultural pursuits in
Carbon county, belongs to one of the early families of the Lehigh Valley, of
Than origin."

From this book: J.W. Jordan, E.M. Green, & G.T. Ettinger, eds. 1905.
"Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of the
Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania." Lewis Publ., NY.

There's more info, including the full excerpt, on his family group sheet:
