The first link is to an entry that records the marriage on 1st March
1616/7 of Robert Banckworth and Mary Busbridge widow of John Busbridge
at St Martin Outwich London.
The second link is to the Busbridge entry in the Visitation of Sussex
which says (in part) "Mary d. of John Reve of the Abbey of St
Edmondsbury in com. Suffolk ffirst marid to Robert Bankworth of London
after to Sr Allexander Temple & is now a widow & sister to my Lady
Sucklin."
The attribution of John Reve to Bury St Edmonds is repeated in a number
of other sources, but the Abdy pedigree in the visitation of Surrey
describes him as John Reve of London. Certainly, the last Abbot of St
Edmondbury was a John Reeve, but he was already an old man when the
Abbey was dissolved and he died in 1541. Even if he had married, it is
not possible that he fathered a daughter who was herself having
children at the beginning of the 17th century. There was on the other
hand, a John Reve living in London in 1582 and Anthony Abdy (Mary
Reve's cousin) was a merchant who became a London alderman so there
were strong London connections.
Was the London John Reve related to or descended from the Bury St
Edmonds John Reeve? The Visitation of Sussex gives a Reve coat of arms,
so presumably there is a visitation entry somewhere.

Re: Marriage of Robert Bankworth + Mary Busbridge
Robert Bankworth joined the Scrivener's company around 1584. His older
brother Edward had joined in August 1580.
(http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report ... mpid=35896)
There was a deed prepared for Roger Abdy in 1576
(http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/records.as ... -h1&cid=59). The
witnesses included Christopher Abdy, John Reve and Edward Bankworth.
Roger Abdy was Mary Reve's grandfather; Christopher Abdy was her uncle;
John Reve was her father and Edward Bankworth was a future
brother-in-law.
This seems to place the Reve family in London and already having
commercial connections with the Bankworths long before Mary's marriage.

Re: Marriage of Robert Bankworth + Mary Busbridge
I am studying the family of Reve of Bury St. Edmunds and also of Reve
of Hubbards Hall Essex (ex Suffolk) who seem to both have originated
from Melford, Suffolk. Each family bore very differnt arms.
You mentioned that there are Reve arms mentioned in the Sussex
Visitation. Could you please describe these and any other info on the
Reve/Reeve family in Sussex?
I do also have information on the John Reeve of London you mentioned.
However it is the first time I have heard of him refered to as John
Reeve of the Abbey of St. Edmunds.
Faithfully,

Re: Marriage of Robert Bankworth + Mary Busbridge
The Reve arms were quartered with the Busbridge arms in the 1634
Visitation of Sussex. They are described as:
Argent, on a fess engrailed sable, between three escallop shells azure,
as many eagles or.
As far as I know, the only connection between the Reve family and
Sussex was as a result of the marriage of Mary Reve to John Busbridge,
following which she lived in Sussex for the rest of her life. Her
sister was married to Sir John Suckling of Roos Hall in Suffolk.
I suspect that the reference to John Reve as being "of the Abbey of St
Edmundsbury" is a mistake.
I'd appreciate any information about or references to John Reve of
London that you can post.

Re: Marriage of Robert Bankworth + Mary Busbridge
Dear John,
The arms you mentioned are the arms of Reve of Bury St. Edmunds which
is very important as it gives us clear indication that he was descended
from this family.
A little history of the family.
Roger (Reve) of Melford 1442-1500 was married to Alice Freman 1446-1505
had two sons to my knowledge and a number of daughters.
His sons were Roger Reve of Bury St Edmunds ukn-1538 married to
Margaret Cooke ukn-1549 and John Reve alias Melford ukn-1540, the 33rd
and last Abbot of Bury St. Edmunds.
There also seems to be other Reve's with a link to this family from
this timeframe also ie Thomas Reve and Giles Reve, cousins most
probably.
Roger Reve of Bury had 3 sons to my knowledge John Reve of Fornhan St.
Genevieve who married Katherine (and had a least one son, John Reve the
younger of Fornham St. Genevieve) Edmund Reve, a priest who married and
had one daughter only and Edward Reve of Bury St. Edmunds who Married
Margaret Coo of Boxford and had a number of sons: Edward, Roger,
Clement, Robert (who married Alice Andrews) and William.
All this info is contained in the visitation of Suffolk 1561.
Roger Reve married to Alice Andrews and had 3rd son Roger Reve who
moved to London and was a Grocer and is shown as such on the Vis of
London 1633-35. Their 4th son was John Reve married to Julian daughter
of Gough and I beleive this may be the one you are looking for but more
proof is perhaps needed.
Suffolk Manorial Families contains the following information under the
pedigree of Suckling of Woodton.
Sir John Suckling married as his second wife Jane, daughter of John
Reve of London, by Mary sister of Roger Abdy.... and widow of Charles
Hawkins af St. Mary's London.
In order to work out who John Reeve of London was, and there are a few
contenders named John in the descendants of Roger Reve of Bury St.
Edmunds I think we may need a little more info. hope this is helpful.
There is a listing in The General Armory for the grant of a crest to
the above mentioned Reve arms in 1633 to Anthony Reve of Brede or
Breade, Sussex. Do you have any knowledge of this fellow?
Regards,
D.W. Reeves

a daughter born about 1584 who could marry John Busbridge in 1604.
Roger's grandson, John Reve the younger (of Fornham St. Genevieve)

Dear John,
In the pedigree given for Reeve of Ipswich in Suffolk Manorial Families
it states the following:
John Reeve,(son of Robert Reeve & Alice Andrews) living in 1615
married Julian Gough and had issue.(unfortunately issue not mentioned)
perhaps Julian Gough was a second wife and Abdy was his first wife?
Robert Reve his father does not mention him on his will of 1613.
The fact that it states: living in 1615 :would indicate to me that he
was an older gentleman.
It is strange though he is not mentioned on the Visitation of London
1633-35. His nephew is however: John Reaue, 2nd son of Roger Reaue and
Deborah Hanks.
John Reeve, the younger, of Fornham St. Geneveive (Suffolk) son of John
Reeve and Katherine(died 1546 leaving a will in the name of Katherine
Harbottle mentioning many names including witnesses Edward Reve and
Andrew Reve. She made her son John Reve the younger of Fornham her sole
exexcutor so he must have been of age) I believe from research he
married Ann Trent or Frent in 1541 in Barningham, Suffolk and
descendants were married into the Kempe family and were holders of a
manor there.
There is also a Daniel Reve D.D. died 1628 who was situated in Banham,
Norfolk and mentioned in Vis of 1664 with the Reve of Bury arms but I
am at a loss to find his actual parentage also.
When I get time I will look into the National Archives and see what
more I can come up with.

circa 1545. His son,Roger (the London grocer) would have been born
about 1580. His son, John, (married to Julian(?)) would have been born
circa 1615. We have to compress the generations quite a lot to give him
a daughter born about 1584 who could marry John Busbridge in 1604.
Roger's grandson, John Reve the younger (of Fornham St. Genevieve)
would have been born circa 1545 which would just about allow him to
have a daughter born around 1584. Do we know anything about him?

Re: Marriage of Robert Bankworth + Mary Busbridge
From careful research of documents at my disposal I have come to a
hypothesis regarding the John Reve of London/ St. Edmundsbury.
John Reve was eldest son of Roger Reve of Bury St Edmunds (brother of
the Abott of Bury St Edmunds John Reve)and Margaret Cooke.
We know that he married and had children and was refered to as John
Reve of Fornham St. Geneveive, Suffolk.
His widow left a will in the name of Katherine Harbottle in 1546 which
mentions their son John Reve the Younger of Fornham St. Genevieve also
mentioned in the will of Edward Page 1558 (It is also probable that
this John Reve (the older) married Mary Abdy at some stage before
Katherine) and spent time in London with his brother Roger Reve.
I also beleive that he had cousins or sons by the name of Andrew Reve
mentioned in the above will and also a further cousins/ sons Thomas
Reve and Giles Reve.
It is my belief that John Reve (the younger) married Anne Tront or
Trent in Barningham, Suffolk in 1541 who in turn had a son Robert who
married Susan Fuller in 1579, also at Barningham and the Reve family
came into posession of a Manor there.
I also believe that Daniel Reeve, Dr of Divinity situated in Banham,
Norfolk is a son from John Reve and Anne Trent/Tont as Daniel Reve is
also a name mentioned in the Barningham Reve family.
I do not know of a record of there being a son by the name of John Reve
to John Reve and Anne Tront/Trent but I beleive from the generational
requirements that he did exist and is he refered to as John Reve of
London and also John Reve of St Edmundsbury and was the father of:
Mary Reve who married 3 times:
1st John Bushbridge
2nd Robert Bankworth
3rd Sir Alexander Temple
Jane Reve who married 3 times also:
1st Charles Hawkins
2nd Sir John Suckling
3rd Sir Edwin Rich
I also believe that their brother was Anthony Reve of Brede co. Sussex
who bore the same arms and a further brother John Reve of Hepworth, co.
Suffolk who disclaimed his arms in the mid 17th century.
Look forward to your comments.

Dear John,
The arms you mentioned are the arms of Reve of Bury St.
Regards,
D.W. Reeves

Edmunds.
Faithfully,

These two links which previously didn't work for me are now working
fine. I've no idea why. (Edit - the first has stopped working again -
Loki is laughing at me.)
