Hudleston of Whittington

I have now seen Col. W.H. Chippindall's History of Whittington (Chetham
Soc. Pub NS 99, 1938) with its chapter on the cadet branch of the
Hudlestons of West Hall, Whittington. They held this manor by knight's
service and the annual rent of a rose of the senior Millom branch, who
in turn held of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Chippindall adds considerably to the account found in VCH Lancs. He
confirms that the manor was acquired by Sir John Hudleston of Millom in
1300 (from Alan de Coupland), and that it was settled for life on Sir
John's brother, Sir Adam Hudleston, then to Sir John's sons John,
Richard, Robert and Adam. Sir Adam died in 1322, and his nephews John
and Robert both predeceased him, without issue. Richard (then Sir
Richard) was served his heir, and succeeded to most of his estates,
having already succeeded to Millom circa 1305, while Adam, the youngest
son, succeeded to West Hall. Chippindall constructs the descent thus:

1. Sir John Hudleston, died c1305, married Sibyl de Cornwall
2a. John Hudleston, dspvp
2b. Sir Richard Hudleston - thence the Millom branch
2c. Robert Hudleston, dsp before 1322
2d. Adam Hudleston, of West Hall, died c1327; married Katherine
3. John Hudleston, of West Hall, died 1336
4. John Hudleston, of West Hall, succeeded as a minor; ff1346-1401
5. Richard Hudleston, of West Hall, died 1415 (IPM)
6a. Agnes Hudleston, married William Greene of Gressingham
6b. Ralph Hudleston, c1389-1438; married Katherine
7. Miles Hudleston, ff 1459, then outlawed
8. William Hudleston, of West Hall, ff 1504
9. Richard Hudleston, of West Hall, ff 1513-1553; brother-in-law of
Brian Tunstall (d 1513)
10a. Brian Hudleston, died vp 1551
11a. Marmaduke Hudleston, died in infancy
11b. Miles Hudleston, of West Hall, died 1577; married Katherine
Conyers
12. Ann Hudleston, daughter and heir, of West Hall; married Thomas
Carus, 1589
10b. William Hudleston, ff 1553

Your posting does not mention any county so please excuse if I am off
the mark!

If this is the village of Whittington near Cheltenham in
Gloucestershire, then I live a couple of miles away in the village of
Withington, which is often confused for other village by van drivers
delivering packages.

But the point of my posting is that I am willing to make any local
checks for you if we are talking of the same place.

David

That's very generous of you and much appreciated; this is Whittington
in Lancashire.
