Does anyone have a clue to the origin of Swanhild, + 1132,
first wife of Dietrich of Lothringen, + 1168, count of Flanders
(1128-1168),
mother of Lauretta, + c.1178.

In the same period we see a Lauretta, + 1192,
daughter of Ludwig I, + 1171, count of Loon (Looz), Rieneck, castellan
of Mainz (1139-1171) and Agnes of Metz.

Ludwig I was a son of Arnold, count of Loon and
N.N. daughter of Gerard + 1108, count of Rieneck, castellan of Mainz.
Her name is said to be Agnes. Count Arnold and N.N. got engaged
1096/1108.

Count Arnold was a son of
Swanhild, said to be a daughter of a count of Holland.

Are there other bearers of the names Swanhild and Lauretta in that time
frame?

The name Lauretta does not appear in the family of Dietrich of
Lothringen, + 1168, count of Flanders so it must originate through her
mother Swanhild.

Perhaps the younger Swanhild was an elder sister of count Ludwig of
Loon and both were children of count Arnold (son of a Swanhild) and a
[Lauretta] of Rieneck-Mainz?

Although there is no source giving the family of Countess Swanhild of
Flanders, it is known that she was related to her husband.

In 'Thierry d'Alsace, comte de Flandre: biographie et actes', _Annales de
l'Est_ 5e série, 43e année (1991), at 83-84 and 101 note 4, Thérèse de
Hemptinne conjectured that she was a daughter of Folmar, counnt of Metz,
whose mother was also a Swanhild. If so, as Hemptinne noted, she would have
been a paternal aunt of Agnes, countess of Looz, whose daughter was named
Lauretta.

I missed the dates before - according to Hemptinne in the paper cited in my
last message, Swanhild died on 4 September 1133. I haven't checked the date
but the year 1133 is given in Annales Elnonensis.

Her daughter Lauretta died at Forest abbey near Brussels in 1170, I think -
I will try to check this when I can.
