Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Searching on the National Archives website for Estouteville/
Stouteville/ Touteville wills, I come up with nothing (even leaving out
the middle "e," and spelling the final sylable "vile," rather than
"ville.") However, "Papers of the Lloyd-Greame Family of Sewerby" on
A2A includes a reference to Henry Toutville's will:
"Wills in the collection are those of Richard Shippabotham (1565);
Giles Stephenson (1611); Robert Taylor (1625); John Carliell (1632);
John Hodgson (1635); Edward Stephenson (1656); Randall Carliell (1659);
Henry Toutville (1663) ..."
This might reveal something, if anyone ever looks at it, as Margaret
(Touteville) Shepard's brother was named Henry. See the 1664-6
Yorkshire Visitation ....
http://www.hti.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/pag ... q=00000113
One last note ... the marriage of her grandfather "Bryan Robinson of
Boston" is probably the following, from extracted IGI:
Boston, Lincs.
Briane ROBERTSON [? sic] to Marget Fitzwilliams, 20 January 1562

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
The Shepard / Touteville marriage is mentioned in NEHGR 100: 73,
which concludes by saying that Margaret has "a very distinguished and
very interesting ancestry", without providing many details.

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Dear John ~
I've enjoyed reading your series of posts on Margaret
Stouteville/Touteville, wife of Thomas Shepard. Good work as ever,
John.
I find that Margaret (Stouteville) Shepard's father, Charles
Stouteville, of Hunmanby, Yorkshire left a will as "Charles Touthvell,"
Hunmanby, Yorkshire, gentleman. It was dated 12 Feb. 1620/1, and
proved 19 Sept. 1622, in York Registry, vol. 37, pg. 54.
The following information on the Stouteville family of Hunmanby is
found in J. W. Clay, Dugdale's Visitation of Yorkshire, with Additions,
3 (1917): 142-143.
PEDIGREE OF STOUTEVILLE OF HUMANBY (HUNMANBY).
Arms: Barry of twelve Argent and Gules, a lion rampant Sable.
I. Emery Estouteville, mar. Ann, daughter of William Hussey, Esq. They
had issue:
II. Robert Estouteville, mar. Catherine, dau. of William Whittington,
of Newborough, co. Staff. They had issue:
III. Charles Stouteville, of Hunmanby, in com. Ebor., signed 1612
Visitation; bur. at Hunmanby 21 April 1621. Will dated 12 Feb. 1620-1,
pr. at York 19 Dec. 1622 (vol. xxxvii, 54); married Anne, daughter of
Bryan Robinson, of Boston, in com. Linc., bur. at Hunmanby 11 August
1620. They had issue:
1. Henry Stouteville, bp. at Hunmanby 3 June 1592.
2. Charles Stouteville, of Hunmanby, Yorkshire, bp. at Hunmanby 26
Sept. 1602; bur. there 25 April 1637; mar. Elizabeth, daughter & coheir
of Robert Knowsley, of Burton Fleming, Yorkshire; mar. there 3 Feb.
1623-4. They had issue, Robert, Mary, Knowsley, and Charles.
3. Anna Maria Stouteville, wife of Thomas Acklam, of Drinho, in com.
Ebor.; mar. at Hunmanby 17 Sept. 1616, bp. there 25 May 1595.
4. Elizabeth Stouteville, wife of John Acklam, of Skipsea; mar. at
Hunmanby ... 1619; bp. there 20 Feb. 1596.
5. Margaret Stouteville, wife of ... Shepheard, executrix of her
father's will, bp. at Hunmanby 3 August 1606; mar. there 1618.
6. Mary Stouteville, executrix of her father's will; mar. Richard Hill
at Hunmanby 31 Jan. 1621-2, bp. there 3 April 1600.

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Nice work, Douglas. Are there any royal lines? The Hussey connection
sounds promising for a start.
One small thing. Clay says Margaret Stouteville married in 1618, which
can't be true. The extracted IGI (batch #M133941) shows ...
Buttercrambe, Yorks.
THOMAS SHEPPARD to MARGRIT TRISSFIELD, 22 July 1632
Whereas the snippet from _Notes & Queries_ says "1632. Mr. Thomas
Shepard and Mrs. Margarit Tutvile were married the *23* of July." See

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Dear John ~
One pedigree in the Ancestry World Tree database which I've cited below
alleges that Margaret (Stouteville) Shepard's mother, Anne Robinson,
was the daughter of Bryan Robertson [sic], by his wife, Margaret,
daughter of Richard Fitzwilliam.
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi ... 1&id=I2866
If the Fitzwilliam connection can be proven, it would seem a good bet
that royal ancestry can be located for Margaret (Stouteville) Shepard.

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Yep, I think Gary has written about the Margaret Fitzwilliam
connection, and failing to find her in pedigrees of "Fitzwilliam of
Sprotburgh."
I think it would probably be helpful to trace the Darleys of
Buttercrambe to see how they were related to Margaret Touteville.
Hopefully, I'll have a little bit more on that later today.

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Dear John ~
The fifteen documents below are taken from the helpful online A2A
Catalogue. They chiefly concern Margaret (Stouteville) Shepard's
father, Charles Stouteville (or Toutville/Touteville), Gentleman, of
Stantondale and afterwards of Hunmanby, Yorkshire.
The first twelve documents are taken from East Riding of Yorkshire
Archives and Records Service: GRIMSTON FAMILY OF GRIMSTON GARTH AND
KILNWICK. The last three documents are taken from East Riding of
Yorkshire Archives and Records Service: OSBALDESTON AND MITFORD
FAMILIES OF HUNMANBY.
I notice that a John Robertson occurs as a witness to one of the
documents dated 1595. I presume John Robertson was a near relation to
Anne Robinson/Robertson, the wife of Charles Stouteville (or
Toutville), Gentleman.
The tenth document below concerns Jane Stuteville [widow of Robert
Stuteville], and her son, Charles Stuteville. Clay's pedigree of the
Stouteville family identifies that Robert Stuteville as the nephew of
Margaret (Stouteville) Shepard. He married Jane Martin and died in
1691.
These documents add considerable knowledge to the life history of
Margaret (Souteville) Shepard's father, Charles Stouteville, Gentleman.

catalogue (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp).
It concerns a Charles Toutevill living in 11 Charles I [i.e.,

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
I think it would probably be helpful to trace the Darleys of
Buttercrambe to see how they were related to Margaret Touteville.
Hopefully, I'll have a little bit more on that later today.
Okay, I couldn't find much, but here's what I have:
(from Mary Frear Keeler, _The Long Parliament, 1640-1641: A
Biographical Study of Its Members_, p. 153)
Henry Darley (born c. 1596), of Buttercrambe, Yorkshire, was returned
for the restored borough of North Allerton, 15 January 1641, and
continued to sit, except for an interval in 1649, until 1653.[fn 76:
_M. of P._ 1: 497 and n. In several lists Darley has been confused
with his brother, Richard, a "recruiter" for Malton.] He was born
about 1596, the son and heir apparent of Sir Richard Darley, J.P. (d.
c. 1654), [fn 77: _Y.A.S. Rec. Ser._ 1: 109, 1885; Gooder, _Parl. Rep.
York_ 2: 74.] and was educated at Cambridge and Gray's Inn. In 1619 he
married Marjory Hungate of York, who died in 1624;[fn. 78: He was
described in the license as of "Screyingham," the name of one of his
family's manors. _Yorks. Arch. Jour._ 14: 497, 1898; _Y.A.S. Rec.
Ser._ 32: 25, 1902; will of Richard Darley of Buttercrambe, 1599, York
Registry 27, fol. 689.] and about 1630 he married Elizabeth, daughter
of William Watts of London, granddaughter of a Lord Mayor. He was M.P.
for Aldborough in the 1628 parliament ...
Darley's family were puritans and he became interested in the
colonial ventures in which the puritans were active. He was acquainted
with Winthrop and Pym, and was a stockholder in the Massachusetts Bay
Company, the Saybrooke enterprise, and the Providence Island Company ...

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Dear John ~
In an earlier post today, I noted that Charles Stuteville/Touteville,
of Hunmanby, Yorkshire, the father of Margaret (Stuteville) Shepard,
was associated in records with the Gates family.
Checking Ancestry World Tree just now, I find that a Richard Darley of
Buttercrambe, Yorkshire was married to an Elizabeth Gates, daughter of
Edward and Elizabeth (Cave) Gates, of Seamer, Yorkshire. See the
following weblinks for information regarding Eliizabeth (Gates) Darley
and her ancestry:
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi ... style=TEXT
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi ... I101771495
If the common connection between the Stuteville and Darley family is
the Gates family, it would seem that the Gates family would be
worthwhile exploring for possible leads.

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Robertson means son of Robert, and Robinson means son of Robin. BAck then
these people could really have been sons of Robert and Robin.
These are such common names I wouldn't assume that two people bearing them
are related without more evidence.

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Dear John ~
I believe that Charles Touteville's great-grandfather, William Hussey,
Esq., is the individual of that name who was born about 1467, probably
at Sleaford, Lincolnshire. He was the second son of Sir William
Hussey, by Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Berkeley, of Wymondham,
Leicestershire. The online Hussey Manuscript
(http://bz.llano.net/gowen/hussey_millen ... s_003.html) states
that William Hussey, born about 1467, "was married shortly before
August 1503 to Anne Salvaine, daughter of Sir John Salvaine of Thorpe,
Yorkshire," as per the "Visitation of Yorkshire." William Hussey was
appointed comptroller of Calais, France by King Henry VIII "for life at
80 pounds per annum" and held the post until his death, according to
"Calendar of State Papers." William Hussey died in 1531, according to
"Lincolnshire Pedigrees," and Anne Salvaine Hussey was remarried to
Ralph Hungate.
If this is the correct individual, then Charles Touteville would have
royal ancestry through William Hussey's mother, Eliabeth Berkeley, as
indicated in the weblink below.

at Sleaford, Lincolnshire.

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Dear John ~
I can add further particulars regarding the ancestry of Margaret
Touteville, wife of Rev. Thomas Shepard. The Touteville pedigree in
the 1612 Visitation of Yorkshire signed by Margaret (Touteville)
Shepard's own father, Charles "Estouteville," gives the following
pedigree for Charles Touteville's wife, Ann Roberston:
1. "Nicholas Robertson = Florence dau. of Sir Humphrey Still."
2. "Bryan Robertson = Margaret, dau. of Richard Fitzwilliam, of
Sprotborough."
3. "Ann, dau. of Bryan Robertson = Charles Estouteville, of Hunmanby,
co. York, living 1612."
Bryan Robertson, father of Ann (Robertson) Touteville, is clearly the
Bryan Robertson who married at Boston, Lincolnshire 20 Jan. 1562
Margaret Fitzwilliam [Marget Fitzwilliams], as suggested earlier in a
post by John Brandon. This comes from an extracted record of the
published parish registers of Boston, Lincolnshire, as indicated below.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... search.asp
I presume Nicholas Robertson, grandfather of Ann (Robertson)
Touteville, is the Nicholas Robertson, of Boston, Lincolnshire,
Merchant of the Staple at Calais, who left a PCC will proved in 1552.
I likewise presume his wife is the Florence Style, wife of "Robert
Robinson" of Boston, Lincolnshire, who is identified as a daughter of
John Style, Citizen and Mercer of London, and his wife, Elizabeth
Wolston, in the Style pedigree found at the following stirnet website:
http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/briti ... style1.htm
John Style and his wife, Elizabeth Wolston, are mentioned in the
following abstract of a Chancery proceeding found on the National
Archives website:
C 1/226/8: John Style and Elizabeth, his wife, daughter of Sir Guy
Wolston, knight, and of Margaret, late his wife. v. Sir Guy Wolston,
knight, and Margaret, his second wife, and Robert Wyttelbury.: The
manors of Hale, Apethorpe, Yarewell, Castur, and Tansoure, with other
messuages and lands. Date: 1486-1529.
Florence (Style) Robinson had a brother, Sir Humphrey Style, of Langley
(in Beckenham), Kent, who died in 1557, as indicated by the the Style
pedigree and the following Chancery suit:
C 1/692/32: William Wood and Johane, his wife, and Rose Bordell,
widow, daughters of John Brongar. v. Humphrey, son and heir of John
Style, citizen and mercer of London.: Detention of deeds relating to a
messuage, orchard, gardens and land in Addington, which complainants
claim upon the death of their father and of Henry, his son and heir.
Date: 1529-1532
Margaret (Fitzwilliam) Robertson's father might well be the Richard
Fitzwilliam, of Kilborne, Middlesex, living 1546, who is mentioned in
the following item from the A2A Catalogue:
http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/documentxs ... esheet=xsl\A2A_com.xsl&keyword=Richard%20Fitzwilliam&properties=0601
I find that Kilborne, Middlesex was the home of Henry Gate, whose
daughter Mary Gate was involved in various records with Charles
Touteville, father of Margaret (Touteville) Shepard. This Henry Gate
was the grandfather of Eliabeth Gate, wife of Sir Richard Darley, which
Darley family was kin in some manner to Margaret (Touteville) Shepard.

Re: Marriage record of Thomas Shepard-Margaret Touteville
Dear John ~
I'm way impressed with your research skills. You keep finding
wonderful nuggets of information. While other pontificate, you
produce! Keep up the great work.
Charles Touteville's pedigree states that his wife's maternal
grandfather was Richard Fitzwilliam, of Sprotborough, Yorkshire. As
has already been discussed here on the newsgroup, by the time period of
this Richard Fitzwilliam, the senior male line of the Fitzwilliam
family at Sprotborough had already died out. In the 1560's, a distant
relative named Hugh Fitzwilliam claimed the manor of Sprotborough as
nearest male heir and he successfully obtained a moiety share of the
manor. Hugh Fitzwilliam amassed a huge pedigree of the Fitzwilliam
family which was signed in 1564 by Hugh himself, and no less than
twelve other living male descendants of the Fitzwilliam family.
Included among the list of signers was "John Fitzwilliam son and heyre
to Richard Fytzwilliam, of Kingshed." This Richard Fitzwilliam "of
Kingshed" could well be the maternal grandfather of Charles
Touteville's wife, Ann Robertson.
If nothing else, the family of Charles Touteville's wife's grandfather
should be mentioned in the Fitzwilliam family pedigree created by Hugh
Fitzwilliam. If Charles Touteville was correct that his
mother-in-law's father derived from the Fitzwilliam family of
Sprotborough, then her family should be represented in this ancient
pedigree. My guess is that Margaret (Fitzwilliam) Robertson descends
from a younger son of John Fitzwilliam, Knt., of Sprotborough,
Yorkshire, and Plumtree, Nottinghamshire (1377-c. 1422), and his wife,
Eleanor, daughter of Henry Greene, Knt., of Drayton, Northamptonshire.
This`John Fitzwilliam (1377-c. 1422) is a known descendant of King
John.
There is one Richard Fitzwilliam whose place in the Sprotborough family
is known. This Richard Fitzwilliam was a younger son of Sir William
Fitzwilliam (died 1534), of London and of Milton (in Castor) and
Marholm, Northamptonshire, by his 1st wife, Anne Hawes. The family and
extended ancestry of Sir William Fitzwilliam can be found in my books,
Plantagenet Ancestry (2004) and Magna Carta Ancestry (2005). According
to an entry in the Ancestry World Tree, Richard Fitzwilliam, son of Sir
William, lived at Ringsted, Northamptonshire. See the following
weblink for this information:
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi ... gy&id=I511
According to Ancestry World Tree, Richard Fitzwilliam of Ringsted
married Elizabeth Knvyett, daughter of Charles Knyvett, of Buckenham,
Norfolk, by whom he had a son, John Fitzwilliam. Given that Ringsted
is similar in sound to "Kingshed," I assume this Richard is the same
Richard whose son, John, signed the Fitzwilliam family pedigree in 1564
as stated above. That this Richard is almost certainly the father of
Charles Touteville's mother-in-law, Margaret (Fitzwilliam) Robertson,
is indicated by the fact that Richard Fitzwilliam's wife, Elizabeth
Knyvett, was sister of Lucy Knyvett, wife of Henry Gate, of Kilburn,
Middlesex and Seamer, Yorkshire. This Henry Gate and his wife, Lucy
Knyvett, were the grandparents of Elizabeth Gate, wife of Sir Richard
Darley, of Buttercrambe, Yorkshire, which Darley family is known to
have been related to the immigrant, Margaret (Touteville) Shepard. I
also find that Henry Gate's daughter, Mary Gate, a spinster, occurs
more than once in records with Margaret (Touteville) Shepard's father,
Charles Touteville. So the Darley-Touteville connection can now be
explained. It apparently derives from a common descent from the
Knyvett family.
For a pedigree displaying at least two descents from King Edward III
for Elizabeth Knyvett, wife of Richard Fitzwilliam, see the following
weblink:
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi ... y&id=I2224
If the above has been correctly stated, it seems like it would be
worthwhile for someone to examine the massive Fitzwilliam pedigree
dated c. 1564 at the Northamptonshire Record Office. If Charles
Touteville's mother-in-law, Margaret (Fitzwilliam) Robertson, was the
daughter of Richard Fitzwilliam of Ringstead, Northamptonshire (or
Kingshed?), she should be mentioned in this ancient pedigree. Lastly,
I might also mention the two records to which I've already posted a
reference which indicates that Richard Fitzwilliam and his wife,
Elizabeth Knyvett, were residents in 1546 at Kilburn, Middlesex in that
year. Richard's father, Sir William Fitzwilliam, is mentioned in one
of these records. For interest's sake, I've copied the two items
below. Henry Gate, husband of Lucy Knyvett, was a resident at Kilburn,
Middlesex at the time of his death in the 1580's.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
