The thing about the excessive distinction between "freemen" and
"non-freemen" is interesting. I don't think John Gifford ever became a
freeman of Massachusetts Bay (perhaps out of principle, or perhaps
thinking it would give his habitual lawsuits more 'traction'). There
was some dispute somewhere about his legal status as 'stranger.'
