Judith Knapp and William Hubbard

She is not an ancestor of mine, but she appears in one of my databases
and I have received the following post'em.

QUOTE
Rev. William Hubbard's mother was an unlisted woman, not Judith Knapp.

First of all, Judith would have been too young to have borne William's
elder siblings.

Secondly, there is an account of his immigration, which plainly says
Judith was his step-mother, as follows: "He sailed from London in the
ship <DEFENCE> in 1635, 'Edmond Bostocke, master,' and landed in Boston,
Mass, Oct 6, 1635, in the company of his father, step-mother and 5
siblings. He was 14 years of age at the time." This would indicate that
his father sired him 15 years prior, that is, in 1620. Judith would
have been 10 years of age, had she been his mother.

These questions were addressed in an extensive discussion
a month or so ago.

There is no 'account' of their emigration, though there is
a passenger list which lists the family going to New England.

The quoted account is modern. The passenger list surely doesn't specify
her status as 'stepmother': that has been an inference, but it has been
argued both ways here.

Dear Renia ~

Your post-em source is badly informed.

The 1635 passenger list of the ship Defence has been published more
than once. I've not aware of any reference in the published lists that
the Judith Hubbard who sailed on this ship was the step-mother of
William Hubbard the younger. This is evidently an interpretation which
has been added by a modern historian. For your interest, you should be
able to find a published passenger list of the Defence by doing a
simple search with Google.

The Judith Hubbard who sailed on this ship was apparently Judith Knapp,
wife of William Hubbard senior, and the mother of all of his children.
This couple were married shortly before 1612 (date of a contemporary
Knapp family visitation record). Judith, wife of William Knapp, was
still living 20 May 1657.

A contemporary record indicates that Judith (Knapp) Hubbard was the
mother of William Hubbard's son, William the younger, and also of his
second daughter, Mary (wife of Rev. William Knight), as indicated in
the record below:

Candler & Candler, Candler's Suffolk & Essex Pedigrees 1 (1868):
316-317 (Knapp pedigree: "Judith Knappe wife to Wm Hobart. A
daughter of hers married Mr. Knight Minister of St. Matthewes parish in
Ipswch; Wm Hobert her sonne married Mary daughter of Nathaniel
Rogers"); 2 (1870): 158 (Knapp pedigree: "Judith [Knapp], married
to William Hobert. William her sonne married Mary daughter of Nathll
Rogers, pastor of a church in N. England .... one of her daughters was
married to William Knight, minister of St. Matthewes parish in
Ipswich.").

You can find further information on Judith (Knapp) Hubbard in the
newsgroup archives.

Thanks, all. I know it has been done to death but I haven't followed it.
I just wanted to know what to reply to my correspondent.
